Kontakt in general - how does it compare?

Post by ttauri »

So, M5v2 isn't working for me, and I've already put off any Intel-buying decisions for a while waiting for it (since M5v1 has been an essential plugin for me); and now that the new Logic breaks v1 compatibility even without going Intel, I think I should start exploring the Kontakt option more seriously.

Anyone who has both, what I'm really wondering is how Kontakt works as far as creating my own patches (don't use library instruments very often). What I really like about MachFive is that the keymap window is right there, and it's an easy thing to drag n drop, or control click on a key or in the keymap window and browse samples. Very speedy for me, and workflow feels very smooth with it. How does Kontakt work for that kind of patch creation (say to create a custom drum kit from my own samples, for instance)--just as easy? a little harder? a lot harder?

Not doing anything supercomplex with keymapping, typically I just want to do stuff like: take something I've recorded from vinyl, assign it to a note or range of notes, adjust the start and end times, tweak ADSR settings; then repeat the process a few more times in the patch. How would Kontakt compare for that sort of work?

Can I play samples through MIDI while I'm browsing? (that snare's wrong, so that one, and that one, wait I like this one)
