FW1082 + DP - am I only missing compressors? Any good a

Post by holty »

Guys,

Please your opinions before I take the plunge and buy this.

I'm strongly considering buying the Tascam FW1082. I want to use it as both a control surface and Firewire sound interface. It will be hooked up to a Mac Mini running DP, of course.

I don't need anything bigger than this really as it's only for home studio recording / songwriting (I won't be recording the whole band live).

From what I can see the only thing missing in this set-up is a compressor stage on the analog inputs side. Any recommendations here?

And what's your opinion - is this a good set-up? Would you consider any alternatives, bearing in mind that I'm sucker for control surfaces with motorised faders and I don't have any PCI slots in the Mac to play with.

Also, if you have a similar set-up I'd love to hear reassuring "yeah I'm so happy with my rig" type comments.

Thanks!

Holty.

It does have inserts, on a couple channels, so you can use an external compressor if you need one.

I bought a FW1082 about a month ago. I am using it with a G5 dual 1.8. For the most part, I really enjoy it, but I believe the DP integration software is a bit buggy and could be improved. For example, you can't open and close windows with the control surface (as advertised). Record enabling DP tracks is inconsistant. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I typically use the mouse to record enable tracks. You can get the EQ knobs to work with the 4 band EQ, but only if it is the 1st plugin on the selected track. Also, When selecting bandwidth, frequency and gain, you really have to press the shift key while turning the knob (fine tune adjustment) or else it jumps too far from value to value. This isn't explained too well in the manual, so I thought I'd mention it.

In my opinion, the control surface is a good deal considering the features and the price. It doesn't do everything and it doesn't replace the mouse and keyboard, but it is still very useful.
