CueMix routing question
I'm using DP 5.12 on a 1.8ghz G5 Mac, OSX 10.4.1, connected to a Firewire 828mk2.
I am trying to use CueMix to route separate mixes to my monitors and headphones (and I'd like to route a 3rd mix to a PA system across the room). This sounds like exactly what CueMix is for - all the ad literature gushes about the possibilities of different headphone mixes - but I am baffled.
The issue I am running into is that computer playback seems to be available only to "Main Out 1-2". Computer playback audio does not seem to be available to Analog Outs 1-8 or to "Phones 1-2". What use is a headphone mix if you can't hear the playback? Is there someway I should be bringing the computer audio out back into the 828mk2? It's already there, being routed to Mains 1-2.
Am I missing something here? I feel like I'm missing something here.
Suggestions?
Peace

CueMix version is 1.4, apparently the latest one, as it has the talkback/listenback and control surfaces menu.
I'm wondering if there's a basic technique I'm missing here, something the designers at MOTU expected me to do to get the results I'm after, something obvious to someone else.

It does seem strange. I updated CueMix and the Ultralite firmware with no change. I spent some hours in the middle of last night playing with this. They do not treat the output via firewire the same as an analog input or output. Really limits the usefulness of the mixer functionality for me. Otherwise the Ultralite/CueMix is so capable, I am not sure why they would cripple it like this.
Take it EZ,

Just looked at this again. I can route video audio on inputs 3&4 to outputs 3&4. I cannot find anyway to route the computer output coming in on firewire to outputs 3&4.
So the question is "Why does the computer output via firewire not show up in the Ultralite's mixer?"
Anybody?
What I suppose will work it to use up I/O by routing(or splitting) the main outs to another set of inputs and sending that to another pair of outputs.
Y'all be cool,
Robert

I found this on MOTU's support pages. Hope it helps.

Audio HiJack?
I'm grabbing at straws here.
I thought we were talking about tracking and overdubbing...

I thought that might be the solution when I found it while trying to figure this out, but as far as I can tell, that sends Mix1 from the 828mk2 to the computer (via firewire), which is sort of the opposite of what I'm after. I want to be able, as robob said, to route computer audio such as iTunes to one of the Analog 1-8 and/or Phones 1-2 output pairs on the 828mk2.cuttime wrote:Cuemix>File>Mix 1 Return Includes Computer Output
Is this what you mean?
Starting to despair... must... think... outside... the... bo-*SLAM! CLICHE POLICE ACTION HAS BROUGHT THIS SENTENCE TO A HALT. MOVE ALONG, NOTHING TO SEE HERE*

The Mix 1 Return Includes Computer Output made no change I can detect. I do own Audio Hijack Pro but it is currently disabled. I may play with that.
The OP (original poster) was talking about tracking, but I jumped onto the thread since my issue is similar.
Again, the real issue that covers the OP and myself is that the computer audio does not appear as channels in CueMix either in the application or on the hardware. This is a gross oversight in my opinion. I am used to digital interfaces plugged into a hardware mixer. My hardware mixer is having issues so I am using the Ultralite until my 003 arrives. I am very surprised that the routing is so limited.
Thanks for the replies.

My apologies to pappy725 - somehow I clicked your link (opening into a new tab) while reading the forum, and then totally neglected to actually READ it.
Here's the text from MOTU:
Muchas gracias, pappy725.
I'll get back on how it works out. Here's to the day when something like Jack is ubiquitous, allowing us complete software audio routing freedom.

This doesn't appear to fix robob's problem, but it does get me closer to what I am after. How do I hear the output of my DAW on more than one bus in CueMix?
Each CueMix bus is a mix of:
1. The input sources that you are monitoring in the CueMix Console
2. Any audio playing back from your computer that is assigned to the same outputs that your CueMix busses are assigned to
So to hear the output of your DAW on more than one bus in CueMix, in your DAW you will need to route the audio playing back to the same outputs that your CueMix busses use.
For example, let's say you're using an 828mkII and you'd like to create two monitor mixes, and the output of your DAW needs to be heard in each mix. We'll say the first CueMix bus is assigned to Main Out 1-2, and the second CueMix bus is assigned to Analog 7-8.
In Digital Performer, you would follow these steps:
* Assign all of your tracks' outputs to bus 1-2
* Create two aux tracks, both with bus 1-2 as their input
* Set the output of the first aux track to Main Out 1-2, and the output of the second to Analog 7-8
* Now all audio is being routed to bus 1-2, and is in turn routed to both Main Out 1-2 and 7-8
You can do the same thing in other DAWs by following similar steps to route your audio through a bus to multiple outputs; check your DAW's documentation for specific details.
Muchas gracias, pappy725.
