Hi everyone, I need some help

Post by miah8000 »

Hello UnicorNation! I am brand new to using DAW and software MIDI recording so some of the questions I'm going to ask will be very noobish. I have been recording on MIDI hardware seq's for a while and am fed up with the problems that come along with that (disks failing, studio space, lack of editing control, etc...) Last month I decided enough was enough and went the software route with a Motu UltraLite and DP 5.12. I was also given a M-Audio Axiom 61 so I didn't need to use my hardware synths to control any soft synths I might want to use. Plus, since it has transport controls, I was looking forward to almost using the software like I had been using my KARMA, press record on the Axiom and recording starts in DP.

I am having some setup issues though that I didn't have to deal with before.

1) As of yesterday, I had dabbled around a couple of times other days, recording a few bars here and there using the VI's included with DP. I noticed that now, no MIDI data is being displayed in the tracks of the sequencer. I can replay what I did and it plays, but there is no MIDI data to look at, edit, etc... When I pull up Quickscribe, it shows 16 tracks of rests, no notes. Earlier it was working fine, showing data, duration, note, etc... just what I would expect. It is probably a button I hit and didn't realize it but if anyone has some suggestions, I am all ears.

2) Controlling the Virtual Instruments via the Axiom. The notes play, the pitchbend and mod wheels work and if I right click on the parameter in a synth and say "Learn controller" the sliders and rotary encoders work too. But I want to setup the Axiom to control the soft synths through NRPN's so I can save the control surface to the Axiom's memory and then recall it later. The issue I'm having is that the NRPN's listed in the DP 5.1 addendum are between 1-4 digits long, there is no mention of the MSB or LSB that the Axiom is looking for. I have the Axiom transmitting to CC 134 (it's controller for NRPNs) but can't get it to talk to the right control in the VI. EX. Modulo - NRPN 301 = Filter Freq that's all that is given for information... how do I make this work?

In the same vein, I can assign transport controls to the Axiom but when I press the record button nothing happens. How can I make this work?

3) I want to setup the "studio" so that DP is the master clock for all of my gear. I can set it up so that my Karma will play when DP plays, but the RPPR patterns that I recorded can't be triggered by the Karma or the Axiom. I am watching the UltraLite transmit clock data to the Karma but the patterns still won't trigger?

I'm sure that there will be a lot of other questions but these are the first ones I really encountered.

Any help is welcome and very appreciated!

Thanks,
Jeremiah

Is it possible that you have deselected "notes" in the "View Filter?"

The "View Filter" is under the "Setup" menu if you want to check it out.

Wow I feel like a dunce, I must have clicked the clear all button because everything was unchecked. Now I know where to find that again.

Thanks emulatorloo!

I can't believe view filter was it! Glad that didn't happen to me my first week or even year with DP or I would probably have given up on it! Seriously- DP's been my main DAW for 7 years now but it amazes me that something like this can and will come up to sucker-punch you from time to time. I don't think PT or Logic users can appreciate the sense of- what do you call it- walking on eggshells? Yeah DP's like a dysfunctional family member sometimes! :?

Yeah, this whole transition has been challenging for me and it's only been happening for about 2 weeks. I chose DP because apparently it has very strong MIDI capabilities compared to Cubase or Pro Tools. Most of the stuff I have done in the past has been MIDI sequencing on hardware (Yamaha RM1x and Korg Karma) I am trying to find a way to integrate these pattern based recording methods into a DAW. I think it will be a rocky transition but once I get a workflow down it should be fine. I also think that I'll integrate some other software like Reason (which I love but couldn't sequence to external gear). I have been looking (to deal with my earlier post about setting up a controller to run my soft synth) at different soft synths that have a lot of customizable features. I love the MX4 but if I can't get this NRPN issue worked out I would probably look at Reaktor or Absynth but those are so deep, it seems a little intimidating.

I would love to keep doing things the way I had been, on the synths above with their internal 3.5" floppy drives) but where I live it is so hard to setup any kind of studio space I want to internalize it to a computer and then drive the hardware from that.

If anyone has any suggestions about how to resolve the other issue of the NRPN's I am all ears.

Thanks for the help so far!

One cannot "Drag & Drop" the infos MIDI of these Machines (RM1X & Karma) but you can record them on audio tracks via your external sound-card and you find yourself with beautifuls Sounbites.
But that can appear "barbarian".

I'm having an issue where the stop and rewind buttons on my Axiom 49 are "sticking" in DP 5.13 when I try to control DP's transport functions from my Axiom. The play and record buttons work fine. Has anyone run into this?

Thanks

I'm having the same issues with my Axiom 25. When I assign the stop button on the Axiom to the stop button on the DP transport, it "sticks" when I press it. This has to be a bug.

I just bought a axiom 61. How did you get even the play and record buttons to work. Where in the DP manual is it? I'm in 4.61 So a title may be necessary so I can look it up in the index. I can get the sliders and rotary Knobs to work but no luck on the transport. Is there a title in the Axiom manual that addresses this?

I've been messing around in Setup --> Commands. There it seems you can assign MIDI to do various things in DP--although it only appears to work sometimes. . .

I created a little tutorial thread on this. Hopefully this will be the definitive guide to eliminate this issue with Digital Performer. I know it had me pulling my hair out and a lot of other people get tripped up by this:
