Motu Traveler Mic Ins NOISE
Hi,
I think I'm getting crazy with this.
This is the second time that this problem happens to me.
Mic Ins 1 and 2 make really big noise, sometimes the noise of the 2nd channel goes to channel 4!....Mic in 1 makes noise with Phantom, Mic in 2 makes noise without phantom....
I tried anything possible.....it simply makes noise.Bus powered and DC, it always makes noise.I tried connecting to different DC and the same.
I returned a Traveler last september when I bought it and they gave me a new unit, because of the same problem....
Have you heard about BAD units? Is it the only Motu interface that has problems?
Any help welcome.

You are a lucky man!
Mine arrived 2 days ago....
The problem with the phantom is solved, but the mic in 1 still makes some noise, when I raise the gain it sounds really windy and sometimes the fry thing again, the rest sound equal, no strange noise rather than a normal pre at the max.
1 month without the interface to get this!

Days back to me the new TRAV is, and tonight I'm running it through things.
Days ago, it worked fine with several mics. Tonight I find Odd Phantom Noise Issues:
when I have a condensor in one ch, it works fine, sounds great, clean and quiet...
Punch in the PAD and ARGH... odd fizzy digital noise starts up.
Remove PAD, clean and fine
now it gets wierder:
with other channels (with nothing plugged in), when I turn the phantom on or off in THEM... the mic-in-use channnel POPS!
Switch on mic PAD and NOISE gets DIFFERENT the more phantoms you turn on (still only the one mic plugged in).
Maybe I've been lucky for decades of engineering but I've NEVER had a mixer or unit where switching phantom on or off on OTHER CHANNELS causes pops on a working channel.
Also this Noise-With-Pad thing has me baffled just to EXPLAIN it...
As to living with it, or the Traveler, I'm not reassured that I can put this on classical gigs with confidence...
1 month without the interface to get this!
It's ain't what you have, it's how you use it.
Here's today's results:
The traveller is connected to a firewire port on a G5 desktop but is running off of its wallwart. I pull the firewire connection and no change.
Further details:
FIRST there's a clean smooth pinkish-noise ocean whoosh that swells UP when phantom is first turned on (mic or no mic) for about 7 seconds and then fades DOWN for 5-7 seconds leaving the more ragged, quieter burbly digital noise at a much lower level under the normal mic signal. This pink-noise effect happens on ALL CHANNELS when their phantom is switched on or off, pad or no pad, mic connected or not.
SECOND: the level of the digital noise is a little different from channel to channel but it is present in all.
THIRD: the digital noise changes it's general spectral 'pitch' when additional channels' phantom is added ON. As each additional phantom is switched on, the 'pitch' rises a bit. The 'pitch' returns to the lower range as the added phantom switches are turned off.
In for a penny, in for a pound,
Traveller... RME FIREFACE... Apogee Ensemble... Prism Orpheus...

Hey,
That's what happened to me!
Phantom weird stuff....
It seems like they solved the phantom problem, I think it's normal when you switch on phantom to hear a weird noise, then it's ok.
Now my problem is that the first channel makes noise itself, I don't know if it's phantom power problem o what.
Motu support just asked me, have you tried resetting to factory, isn't it funny?
I think they tried so solve something, but they didn't check the unit before sending it back to my dealer.
Now the lesson learned is not getting Motu hardware anymore, this is the 3rd time, and I'm fed up.
I know that the unit work ok for some mates here, but, for me doesn't work, that's what counts to me.
When you have a client in front, and you check and change all the mics and cables looking for the problem it's frustrating, also when you send the unit back to motu tech, and you have to rent an interface to work, then receive the unit again, and the problem again, and sending it back one more time, and renting again, and losing some clients....
yes that's my story, now Motu hardware doesn‘t give conficence to me.
I'm trying they change the unit for a RME FF800 paying the difference.

Guys you are very lucky!!!
I have changed the Traveler for 3 times.
The first time it had a huge scratch, the second time noise "fry" at preamps and the third time the headphones output was non functional.
I like Traveler's converters and its the only solution for me cause of its on board SMPTE.
The one I have now came without cover at the ADAT output. Of course MOTU sent me one and they helped me alot through all replacements. But I agree that is awful to send broken replacement units.
Tell me if possible one thing. When I change the S/R it DOESN'T make the usual click noise.
Does any of you have a unit without this click noise when changing S/R.

Not sure if this will help, but I ran into a problem with noise on the Traveler.
When I power it via the firewire I get the noise, when i plug it in with the wall wart, all noise goes away. (this is with the correct power option switch settings)

Mac Pro 2.93G 12 core, 28G RAM, 10.9, DP 8, Apogee Symphony i o, Apogee Symphony 64 PCIe, Motu MTP AV, MachFive 3.2 and other fun stuff
Mine (both) have shown the noise issue (both a crackley bacon-frying sound and another changeable digital hash noise) with and without phantom, on wart and firewire power.alobonzo wrote:Hi,
Mine made the noise DC and Bus Powered, it simply made noise.
At the end....I'm going Presonus.
As has been said here this is a DANDY designed box,
knobs to use it without a computer hooked up,
power options,
SMPTE...
maybe they shoulda just not done the chinaware thing, made it in Mass and charged more for something that actually WORKED reliably. I probably wouldn't now be waiting for an Ensemble to come in while second guessing myself as to not going Metric Halo....

Traveler works very good for many people here.
All of its futures. You now what I believe, after receiving 4 malfunctionig units. Motu is not a reliable company at all. Some guys at their support are not serious at all. After a long conversation abou the reasons of the problems of the 4th unit, they answered that " all units are fully checked before they leave our factory". After all it has tremendous converters and very good preamps. So regarding its price its a very good choice, BUT IF YOU ARE LUCKY TO RECEIVE A GOOD ONE

having been working ok (except for the mic input noise issues) for the days it's been back, this morning it refused to turn on.
Not on firewire power
not with the wallwart
nothing
The expected ENSEMBLE replacement it turns out is as unobtainable as a MACKIE HUI conroller... 4 weeks or better.
Tomorrow I pick up an RME Fireface-800 and hope THIS will allow me to do work and not look incompetant in front of paying customers.
