I have been wanting massive myself. It really seems to have "that sound," if you know what I mean.

FWIW the reviews all say it is pretty CPU heavy.

The only current deal I know about is at B&H:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/4 ... sizer.html

But that could be a misprint, because every other vendor has it higher.

Typically you do not see the NI products discounted very much.

Emu you are The Man. Not just The Man, but the Big Friekin' Man! That is 100 $ less, 33 % less than what I found. I am ordering it now, we'll see if it's a typo or not. That leaves me with some cash to buy a delay plugin too ;) This is a great day.

Easier choices than synths.

amazing sound quality, money is no object --> Soundtoys Native

affordable, solid pro sound for day-in day-out studio use --> PSP Lexicon 42 or 84

affordable creative tool for delay-based sounds and effects --> Fabfilter Timeless

affordable "way out there" experimental delay tool --> PSP 608

cheapest way to add good quality delay to the studio --> Audio Damage Dubstation

By all means, Reason is a good bang for the bucks.

Several synth and samplers included, and some more.
BTW rock solid, cpu friendly and DP friendly too.

I have REPLICANT!! Lots of fun. Hard to find a solid use for if one is not a hip-hop producer (which I am so not), but for the money, it's weird and amusing and different.

Looks like you've already made a pick, but I have to put in a word for NI's FM8. I think it's quite a beauty- more flexible than massive, IMO.

on a timely note, Virtual Instruments magazine, which I just got in the mail yesterday, has a review of Massive this month. Part I of a II part review.

In theory, theory works in practice, but in practice, it doesn't

I like it too. Simple and tweakable.

I also like DP's native Echo, though. I almost alway have it in use as left and right mono auxes.

I'd like DP's Delay more if it had internal panning. Automatically throwing the delay signals hard right and left is a quick way to F up phase and mono compatibility.

My favorite soft delay remains UAD-1 Space Echo. Sounds like the real deal to me. Can be clean and clear or dark and warbly (my favorite). And it's reverb sounds nice and springy.

Third-party-for-the buck, though, DubStation's awesome. I also use their Reverence and Liquid. They're much more limited in quality and use, but work great on the right source -- and they're so inexpensive, both dollar-wise and CPU-wise.

there is a 2 week unlimited demo of mx4 available...check it out. it's very VERY cool.
rob papen's blue (robpapen.com) is great, predator looks pretty cool, and albino3 (linplug.com) is also very good.
virsyn has their new poseidon which looks pretty interesting, too.

reaktor is great too, but i too lacked the ambition (and time) to really delve into it too much...reason is excellent also, and a lot of fun besides.
there are a zillion synths out there...lots of fun to be had!
Albino 3 is a great synth. I sold my virus c (until powercore virus became UB) and can almost say at times I don't miss it! I hear great things about blue but also a resource hog?
Macbook pro, 3 gigs of ram, osx 10.62, Dp 5.13, Live 8.1.2, Reason 4, Tc powercore Virus, Albino 3.02, proper ergonomic sitting posture, plenty of coffee (french press only with a pinch of cardamon added)
My dp inspired music.....

I want a synth that is "more" than bleep-bleep bloop-bloop and can take me in new creative directions - multiple LFO's, lots of waveforms and envelopes, etc. Thank you.
For Cost effective I HAVE to go for Propellerhead Reason. It might look a bit toyish but there a lot that can be done in it. The subtractor and the Malstrom should serve you well in a lot of situations. And it works great when used with DP.

I'm not saying it's the best but I haven't seen its limitations yet...
There is quite a buzz about thor in reason 4 :o

Blue is great. A really nice sounding synth that is intuitive to program. It can be a hog if you've got all 6 oscillators going with multiple FX and all the other bells and whistles, but most patches are pretty reasonable I find. I use this VI in almost everything I do.

I've been demo'ing the G-Force Minimonsta with DP (5.12). I cannot record automation data, i.e. such as hitting play and using the mouse to change filter frequency during playback. All of my other VI instruments do this, no problem. Is this a bug in Minimonsta? Anybody know? If Minimonsta cannot record automation, that would make it useless. The only way to record automation I've been able to do, is drawing curves, which is ridiculous for playing a synth.
