Opening 5.12 files with 5.11?

Post by wheever »

Hey kids,

So, my co-writer is sending me revisions of one of our projects and he's now using 5.12. I'm still on 5.11, and given some of the issues some people are having with 5.12, wish to stay there. (Everything is totally rock-solid for me, and I don't wanna mess with the Mojo. :) )

Can 5.11 open 5.12 files? And if not, does someone know a work-around? (ie: will load chunks work?)

TIA! 8)

Absolutely incompatible unfortunately.

The only way to get from 5.12 to 5.11 is to do a 'save copy as 5.x' in 5.12 which will then completely re-create the entire audio files folder with the pre-5.12 file naming protocol.

If your co-writer can't revert to 5.11 I'd suggest updating to 5.12 at least for this project (you can have both on the same system).

Well, isn't that a F#$%^& drag.

I guess I'll install 5.12 and backsave...appears to be the best option for now.

Thanks for the info, Sir Clifford!

Just an FYI: I have had so many problems with 5.12 that I have moved back to 5.11 (no problems, rock solid)

My 2 cents!

Peace

Here's a few that I've encountered. For now I'm staying with 5.12 because not many are major problems as long as you're aware of them. And also because it would be way too much hassle to revert mid-project becuase of the file naming thing.

- Playback glitching (I'm sure I get more than I did on 5.11 - can't prove it though).
- 5.12 doesn't timestamp the SDII files properly when recording (see the thread for more details)
- OMF import is not working (it's even worse than 5.11, which wasn't stellar, but at least it worked)
- Projects created in 5.11 often have soundbites that just won't play back.
- Crashing with more than one MIDI device group (see thread - I haven't tested this one).

I'm on 5.11 mainly because of my #1 client not wanting to "upgrade".

5.12 was a real horroshow for me - especially in DAE mode. I spent many hours just cataloging the issues. Audiosuite plug-ins disappearing. The timestamp thing. Also, dragging chunks would sometimes crash my whole system - I mean, frozen mouse total lockup. Haven't seen that since OS9 on my G4.

I think it's really goofy that if you so much as open a 5.11 project in 5.12, and, say, move a fader or adjust an edit, you then have to save every soundfile again if you want to open it in 5.11.

You should be able to save without the audio. It's that simple.

At least give the choice! It's really amazing they didn't do that.
