Older machine - what version of DP?

Post by Chris Fitzgerald »

I just upgraded my old G4 800 quicksilver to Tiger recently. An older partition still has on older version of OSX running DP4, but I'd like to upgrade now while I still can. This machine is for audio only. What stable version of DP should I upgrade to, and what is it likely to cost to upgrade from DP4?

Thanks in advance!

To 4.6 was 150.00

To 5.1 is 195.00

I do not know if motu still will sell you 4.6

I am on a dual g4 1.2.

To me --

4.6 was more efficient than DP 4.12 (no offence motu, but 4.12 was dog slow)

5.11 to me is best dp on OS X. Most stable, most efficient.

So for me at least, 4.6 was better than 4.12, and 5.11 is better than 4.6 in terms of stabilty and speed.

OTOH I have never run DP on a single 800 processor.

I assume though if 4.12 is working for you audio only then 5.11 would too. YMMV.

On yet another hand Motu sys requirements:

--
System Requirements for DP 5

The minimum requirements for DP 5 are:

Mac OS 10.3.7 or higher (10.4 or higher for DP 5.1 or later)
G4 500 MHz or faster
512 MB RAM
A CD disk drive for installation
We recommend:

G4 dual 1 GHz or faster, or any Intel Mac (DP 5.1 or later required for Intel Mac support); dual processor/dual core systems are also recommended
1 GB RAM or more
17" (or larger) monitor is highly recommended

---

ON EDIT -- I would start saving for a new machine -- the consumer core 2 duos will be a huge upgrade for you when the time is right -- they are faster than the old dual g5 towers were for a fraction of the cost.

I have a Quicksilver dual 800, running 10.4.6 and DP 5.11. Very stable setup.

Yes. DP is Universal, so you don't have to upgrade it, which is nice.

However, I can attest that the hardware cost ain't the end of it. I spent several thousand bucks upgrading the other software on my laptop, when I went from G4 to MBP. Almost all my Adobe, Mac, Avid and other upgrades cost extra, as did most of my plug-ins. You also have to factor the cost of upgrading any PCMIA or PCI hardware that can't make the leap to Intel hardware.
