I had a dual boot G4 running both OS9 and OSX at one point. I could run Norton with OSX running to fix OS9, but it just doesn't work the other way around....

backwards incompatibility-- plus, Norton dumped Mac support ages ago, so there's no Norton utility to support the later versions of Tiger.

If you tried to use a defunct Norton and OS9, you are likely to lose everything.

That Ring is a mess, ain't it?

"But Sam, you can't always be torn in two".

Seems to me that you are Frodo carrying the burden now and are in search of helpful a helpful Samwise at this time. There must be a solution somewhere. Perhaps laying before your very eyes right now there remains hope unlooked-for, as Tolkien would say.

Start by going to an Apple Store to see if the "geniuses" have any suggestions. You could call Apple if your warranty still covers phone support, but they'll nab you for $50 or so just to ask a single question. Of course, depending on where you live, it could cost you that much in gas to drive to an Apple Store.

Then, contact at least one of the Data Recovery places if for nothing else than for advice

Data Rescue II can't search files with selecting that specific sd2 file format, but it can list ALL of your lost datas.

Then it's very easy to make a search within the list and rescue the needed ones. In fact the recoverable files appear with their exact name, size, extension and creation time.

Really powerfull in these desperate situations !

I'm not sure I follow you.

This happened last november, but I pulled the drive, and stuck it on a shelf in the hopes that something might surface someday to be able to recover the data.

I ran data rescue ii, and it didn't reveal the erased files. Given the length of the session (live recording), there should be 18 files all about 500 MB each. I did not see these on the list, either, regardless of file type.

Lookin for hope,
e

Did you really tried all Data Rescue II search options ?
When I had recently my serious headache, it discovered around 14Gb of lost and recoverable data. Mainly sd2 files of course.

BTW I use the last Data Rescue II v1.1.1t (UB, october 2006 release)

This is something I've posted in a similar thread here in UN but I repost here in case someone find it useful.

During backing up, instead of trashing the old backup I trashed the file I had just being working on!!!

DataRescue II recovered everything (including some great live tracks a couple of musicians had recorded the previous evening) and saved me from having to redo the session and try to recapture the same performance. I'm sure you can imagine what that means.
I finally couldn't believe that I also avoided the embarrassment of calling the musicians trying to explain the situation to them...

DR II works and the only thing you should be aware of, is that there should be no changes to the HD where the files belonged before you act with the DR II.

I've been told sd2 is used by another company called Digidesign.
Anybody have ever heard something about those guys ?

Just got an aswer from Prosoft Engineering Customer Support :

"We have a custom file module available (at no additional cost to you) that can recover your Digital Performer files. We are working on a new release of Data Rescue II that will have many of the custom file type modules we have created over the past few years incorporated into the new version, but for now you can follow the instructions below to add this module to your copy of Data Rescue II and recover your files from Digital Performer."

Wow !

Digidesign still supports SD2 for backwards compatibility, but they also allow for native use of other formats. I don't know many PT people who still use SD2. They mostly use AIFF and BWF, ensuring compatibility with the rest of the world.

(and suddenly there was only the sound of running footsteps echoing down the hall as Eric runs to his hard drive to start this process....)

Thank you all,
I'll let you know what happens....
(I actually won't have time to get to this until the weekend, but ooh ooh!! Excitement!!)
