M52 falls over after extensive preset browsing.

Post by Sarcazm »

Anyone else have this problem? Also applies to stand alone.

I monitored the mem usage for M5 and noted that it doesn't always release the memory when changing presets, so I'm guessing that eventually it runs out of memory then quits (possible memory leak).

(Note: I browse from the DVD then copy the samples and presets that I'm interested in to my HD. It's possible something funky's going on there)

Not sure how to check mem usage with Macs, but I'd be interested in seeing if you guys note similar trends. If so I'll post a technote.

Thx

Are you on a Mac or PC? I've done a lot of browsing in M5.2 on a Mac, and that has not happened yet. Of course, I have a lot of memory! But I have run it for days at a time and not noticed any performance problems.

PC, and most definitely not a top of the line one at that!

This is not a show stopper for me, as it works well (at least considerably better than Ver 1) aside from that issue. However, memory leaks are notoriously hard to pin down, so it wouldn't surprise me if perhaps there was one, especially on the Windows platform.

For sure I'll need to bump up my laptop's memory and probably the HD at some point when cash allows.

Sarcazm,

For those of us that are somwhat knowledgable on the PC-side...
If you please could jot down a little config-.sig... kind of like the one that I have minus the mac :-)

That way people that read your posts easily could see if your setup could be the problem.

My suggestions would be (depending on OS)..
Memory...
running out of swap and / or disk space....
Memoryleaks are (as you write) hard to pin down. BUT, the simplest way to check (for a simple memory leak. is to leave your machine on over night with only a simple sequence running/loop on you machine. In the morning you check how much memory is used by the M5.2. If it has grown over night, there is a chance there is a simple memory leak there somewhere. Having not enough memory doesn't help, but this might be a good way to start.
Also, there's a good chance that there isn't a memory leak, but instead poor Garbage collection.
