No, here we don't go again. Fortunately, one of us is mature and intelligent and able to ignore the ramblings of the slow children at play attempting to hijack a topic. Nietzsche said it quite well (paraphrasing) "...it is great sport to wind people like that up and watch them go off like an alarm clock." I've set the timer at 5 minutes...FMiguelez wrote:.

Well, it did work accurately with Mr. Bronx...

We don't go again into what? I can only hope I will not see again revengeful attitudes, personal attacks, and suburban expressions.
"Mature and intelligent" - very useful self-appreciating terms. "Rambling", "slow children", "attempting to hijack a topic" - very useful depreciatory terms. Sticking labels and is surely an easier business than placing rational arguments under one's statements.
Nietzsche is one of my heroes, I have read a few of his books. I am happy to see his name mentioned here - he was a fine musician as well. However, I must say that that "paraphrase" looks extremely doubtful to me. It's not very hard to "paraphrase," especially when one fails to mention the source. Anyways, some food for thought:
Nothing on earth consumes a man more quickly than the passion of resentment. (The Will to Power)
The strongest knowledge (that of the total unfreedom of the human will) is nonetheless the poorest in successes: for it always has the strongest opponent, human vanity. (Assorted Opinions and Maxims)
There are no facts, only interpretations. (Notebooks)
The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently. (The Dawn)

Nickysnd:
Look, this is getting old. This is not a forum to argue nonse with other members. The topic of the thread is... something about rhythms... (I can't remember NOW)
We should argue PASSIONATELY and heatedly about MUSIC. Your previous clashes with MLC and McKelly started when the topic at hand deviated into personal stuff territory.
PLEASE let's not go there again. Argue and discuss as much as you want, as long as it's an intelligent MUSIC-RELATED argument only. That's the purpose of this place.
You seem to know a great deal of music. Why not go there instead? You mentioned Bartok. Now, that is interesting. Would you care to comment on his music-writing techniques?

...speaking of weird time signatures, anyone here ever hear of those Dream Theater guys?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieRFnlcsZ0g
Jordan Rudess on keys. You might've seen him in the demo movie on MOTU's site for the Ethno Instrument.
Every time I see those guys play I wanna throw my music gear and my woefully inadequate musicianship into the trash.

Yep, one of my fave bands. Jordan is also an excellent reader as you can tell from many of DT videos. There is a nice gtr lead section in the medley from Erotomania which uses quintuplets, it was one of the "must learn" licks in college time.AlMacMeister wrote:...speaking of weird time signatures, anyone here ever hear of those Dream Theater guys?

You might want to check out Meshuggah, they use rotating time signatures, like a 5/4 gtr part with 4/4 drums. The parts meet at every 20th fourth. Here's a nice example of their various specialities http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5YEqmIIdj8

Odd time, time signature changes, rhythmic complexity and rhythmic exquisitness RULE!!!!
I was looking, just the other day, at Stravinsky's Dumbarton Oak's piece, and it is just GENIOUS!! The rhythmic detail, and nuance... the subtle complexity... Wow!

Thanks for mentioning Don Ellis earlier in the thread... his "Tears of Joy" was one of the first vinyls I ever bought and remains today as one of the best examples of very musical music with complex meter and harmony. Bartok is fun to study but Don Ellis is great to bask in... His "Electric Bath" doesn't suck either. Pity he died so young.
My high school marching band did Riverdance music one year which included one tune where we marched in 9/8. I still think the people how could teach 150 sweaty teenagers to count "1,2 1,2, 1,2 1,2,3" while playing their instruments and flying across the field are pretty heroic.
great thread! very interesting. Some assymetrical rhytms from Bulgaria:

Better not go into detailed explanations lest I spark of another war!
I love ethnic music. All those folklore musicians in "backward" countries Bulgaria, Romania, India etc. - very humbling!

Thanks for posting this. I love this kind of stuff. Makes me want to dance, but I keep tripping over my left foot. Maybe I need three feet (or maybe two an a half).aranos wrote:great thread! very interesting. Some assymetrical rhytms from Bulgaria:

I used to think Mahavishnu Orchestra was complicated.
Then I thought Indian rhythms were complex...
And the band grooves along and acts like it's nothing. "We'll be back in 15 minutes, folks. Please tip your waitresses and bartenders." I'm not making fun of it whatsoever but the casualness of it just blows me away. I'd need an oxygen tank after playing that ••••.
The singer's throat - interesting thing going on there

How does one make one's throat do that??
Love it!
Thanks for that aranos
Speaking of odd time sigs, anyone seen Ravi Shankar putting together the piece for Concert For George? It's a 2 DVD set and there's a lot of footage on how it was put together that is just so cool. The whole show is really good and heartfelt IMO. Have you seen that one Spikey?
Anyway back to 22/8.

peace out
