Recording Sysex?

Post by Percy the Burp King »

I am able to "bulk dump" from hardware soundmodules into DP 4.5 by recording into a track. The data shows up in the Event editor and the System Exclusive Editor window.

Problem:The track is recording from the time I hit record on DP, then reaching over to the soundmodule to hit the "enter or yes" button to initiate the...dump and at the end of the...dump when I stop DP. It seems like I end up with extra but harmless data ???

I tried the "Recording Sysex into the editor window" procedure on page 503 of the User Guide. The MIDI monitor "MIDI system Common light (labelled Co) lights up indicating a proper connection. However, data in not recorded into the sysex editor window.

I was hoping to record the exact beginning and end of the...dump into the sysex editor without added messages that occur when recording into a track.

Any recommendations???

I do this much the way you are describing; I put DP in record then punch "enter" or "yes" etc. on the module. This will simply put your data package a few beats into the track- I don't think this will add any extraneous data. If you really need it at the very top, you can snip out the time before the data. I usually don't mind waiting a few seconds for the data to play back to my modules. (I usually solo that track when playing it)

DP will record sysex while in record/pause mode (hit 2 then 3).

I don't know about all the extra data you mentioned though. Does it get into a track when just recording notes?

I'll try to record in pause mode to see what happens.

This will simply put your data package a few beats into the track- I don't think this will add any extraneous data.

I'm not a sysex wiz but I've noticed several identical rows of data at the end of the dump (which maybe occurs during the time it takes me to be sure that the ...dump is completed and stopping recording.)

I'm probably being needlessly particular about this. The fact that I can record the sysex data from my "old friends" is good enough.

Appreciate the input.

I tried recording sysex from my MotifES6 while in pause and had no success...the message appeared incomplete and would not dump back to the keyboard. Each device is a bit different in how it breaks up the data, so that may not be a problem with other devices. I think that the sysex spec really only defines the header and footer and leaves the rest to the manufacturer. It may be that repeated message is just how that box works. I can't imagine that DP adds any data to an incoming sysex...though stranger things have happened.

It does matter from which device I record sysex, once the dump has ended, there continues to be some type of messages that's recorded. If I didn't disable DP, that message would continue endlessly.

I also tried to record in record-pause. The problem was I didn't know where the actual end of the dump was. See above.

When I used to dump data into an Alesis DataDisk (still have it, still use it from time to time) the disk would stop writing when the dump was completed. I guess that's what I was expecting to happen with DP.

Hey, could those be some other kind of messages, like active sensing etc? maybe the synth is transmitting them all the time. Try recording from the synth's MIDI out without initiating the sysex...if you get something that's it. Some Yamaha stuff is bad that way. You could then use input filtering to block it.
