Anyone using the Cranesong Phoenix plugin with DP?

Post by apeak »

My second post on this board. I am using DP4.6 on a power mac G5. There seems to be a lot of praise of the CraneSong Phoenix plugin recently and I was wondering if anyone on this forum is using it with DP? If you are, I'd like to know if you had any problems installing and getting DP to work with it, if you use it often, and how you like it on your mixes?

Thanks in advance.

Cranesong Phoenix is TDM and thus only available for Pro Tools. As it's said to be coded and optimized for that format specifically, I wouldn't expect a migration to Native formats (e.g., AU, VST) any time soon.

If you want a popular Native solution that approximates what the Phoenix does (tape-like saturation and compression), check out PSP VintageWarmer:

VintageWarmer rocks. Worth way more than $149.

The new Channel Strip Pro from URS might fit the bill. Costs more than $149, but does a lot more.
I just got the demo but have not tried it yet.

I have been useing the URS CSP since the first day it went on sale and I can tell you for sure that you can get that analog saturation type sound with it... big time! Then, you can try to get the smile off your face, I love that plugin.

How is it on the CPU (compared to their other plugs)?
Does it use less when sections are bypassed?

I rented (rent to buy) their everything pack for a project and was planning to buy it, but I think the CSP might do all that and more.

Tim: the cpu usage is moderate. Obviously this is going to depend on the CPU you are using. I haven••™ tried to get a instance count as I am in the middle of a large project. Yes you can disable modules of the plugin that you are not using and I am told that it does cut the overhead but by how much, I can not personally say.

An alternative that is far more stripped down, but sounds amazing [subtle!]

Airwindows iron oxide. Probably 1/10th the cost of pheonix

The one downside is there are no pre-sets for a starting point, so it takes me a lot longer to get it where I want it.

No pretty flashy user interface. However, so far, it has taken a bass track and made it--well--I can't think of a good word. It just sounds real, smooth, bright, beefy, and you only need to use a touch of it.

I fooled around with the 150 ips setting [imagine this in real life!], and it is a bit noisy, but if you want to make something sound huge, this will get you there.

If anyone else has tried it out, send me some DP clippings of the settings you are using, I'd like to build a library to share with everyone.

If you are one that likes a DAW but loved the character of tape when it was around [especially the higher speed 15/30 ips sound] give this a try.

I'm liking the AirWindows plugins, too. I've bought a couple as well as snagged all the free ones. I like the focused purpose of each plugin and the simple interface, which makes it easy to decide which one to use and how to use it.
The PSP plugins are some of my favorites.
I have the DUY Valve plugin, which can do some of the same things as Vintage Warmer, Iron Oxide and other analog flavor-adders.
I also have that URS Channel Strip Pro taunting me from the sidelines, though. It looks to be very interesting.

I had looked at the DUY DaD tape plug. I forget where, but I heard someone do a side by side with iron oxide on drums, bass, and dist. guitar, and the Iron Oxide seemed to win hands down for what I was looking for [tape, all tape, and nothing but tape], but the DUY interface looks pretty sexy, and it probably has presets that I wish I had;

Does it have presets?

When I used to run DP under DAE, I used it on every channel. The difference it made was not slight, it was huge. Unfortunately, it won't run under MAS. It won't even run under RTAS, it's TDM only. It is fantastic though. I have since tried most of the other offerings that claim to do the same, but they all sound fake and/or hyped to me.
