Big problem in MachFive 2 on my system
MachFive 2 has been running flawlessly on my system since I installed it last Saturday (August 11). I quit MachFive 2 tonight to watch a DVD. When the movie was finished, I quit DVD player and tried to open MachFive 2 again, but it would not even go past one bounce of the icon before it stopped. It's not an authorization problem; the iLoks check out fine, and still show that the MachFive 2 registration is present and working. I tried the standalone version of MOTU Symphonic Instrument, and it booted just fine, so there's no universal problem with standalone plugin/apps.
I opened Digital Performer, and MachFive 2 loaded perfectly fine as a plugin, which shows that it IS installed, and IS authorized. But it refuses to boot up as a standalone app. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it twice now, each time restarting the computer, running Disk Utility and repairing permissions (there were none to repair), and I've tried everything I know. I've taken my MachFive 2 data hard drive off-line, thinking that might have some corrupted data, but it doesn't change a thing. Besides, MachFive 2 never gets far enough into the booting process to access a disk. The dock icon bounces once, and stops.
The only thing I can think of that happened after quitting MachFive 2 was that my DVD player crashed with a scratched disk, though I was able to skip ahead and finish the DVD after restarting the computer. MachFive 2 however, will not even begin to boot now. Not even after reinstalling it twice and deleting preferences!
Here is a list of what I've tried so far:
••• I have uninstalled all software that was installed since MachFive 2 was installed.
••• Repaired permissions (several times)
••• Uninstalled MachFive 2 (twice)
••• Reinstalled MachFive 2 (twice)
••• Taken data drive offline (twice)
••• Restarted Mac after every major operation above
••• Opened MachFive 2 in Digital Performer (works fine)
••• Opened other plugin/apps as standalone apps (MOTU Symphonic Instrument, Ivory, etc.) They all work fine in standalone mode.
••• Tried opening MachFive 2 from a saved Performance file. It asks me to choose an app. I choose MachFive 2, but nothing happens.
••• Checked Console Logs. Can't find any direct references to crashes, etc. Only installations for MachFive 2
I sent all this as a Tech Note to MOTU. Hopefully someone there will have a clue. Any takers here? I'm not desperate, I guess, since I can still use it in DP as a host, but I certainly enjoy working with it as a standalone app, and I don't want to lose that ability. Not to mention the fact that something is obviously very wrong!

Shooshie,
What did you actually check in the Console log ? Just the Crash-logs ?
The MachFive log (assuming there is one) ?
What about the..
Console log ?
System log ?
My guess is that you will see something in either of the two last ones...
If the apps crashed before it is correctly instantiated, traces of the crash will hopefully show up in either of the two last ones...
Have the Console open when you try to start the App.

Yes, I've checked all the logs, and even uploaded some to my tech support link. But the problem is that it didn't crash. It just quit opening. I've been on the phone with tech support for the past hour, and we went through all the steps again. They're totally stumped as well. This makes no sense.
It works as a plugin, but all stand-alone capability is GONE! Meanwhile, MOTU Symphonic Instrument still works fine, and it is structurally identical to MachFive 2 as far as files in the Finder, and files within the Package Contents.
MachFive 2 standalone is just broken! No amount of reinstallation will fix it. I'm thinking of reinstalling my entire Mac system. I hate to do all that, but it may be necessary. If I start from a clean drive with a clean install, it HAS to work then. HAS to!

I'm a new MachFive v2 user, and wanted to chip in - I have exactly the same problem: it won't launch as a 'stand-alone' app, but will run as a plug-in within DP!
Other than that - wow! I've been 'out the game' for a while, and having been a DP user in a past life, decided to get upgraded and add MachFive now that it's Universal Binary. Having never had a sampler before, and being used to workstation keyboards, the authenticity of the sound from MachFive is refreshing (if a little un-nerving). As an experiment I built one of my old Korg Trinity 'bread-and-butter' combis in MachFive: right-hand piano with layered strings, left-hand bass and velocity switched stabs - took about a minute, and sounded great. Can't wait to get down to some proper orchestrations and arranging....
For me, MachFive is flexible, relatively intuitive (still to RTFM) and with a large 'starter' library, I think it's also great value.
Hopefully MOTU will iron out this 'minor' launch problem soon!

Be sure to report it to MOTU. They need to know that it's happening to more than just me!
Oh, and welcome back to DP. You're going to find Mach Five 2 to be one of the greatest apps you've ever played with. I'm loving it. I tell ya, it's just wonderful!

I think I may have uncovered a clue. While I was comparing the package contents of MOTU Symphonic Instrument with those of MachFive2 (they're basically identical, with only the names changed), I accidentally opened the UNIX Executable Script called "PluginhooksSA" which is in the package contents. It ran in the terminal and stopped.
After closing this, MSI will no longer open. It now behaves just like MachFive 2. I think they both have changed something deep in the belly of UNIX, via the terminal script, and now UNIX will no longer compile the plugin as a standalone app.
the answer is going to have something to do with revising that UNIX Executable script.
(meanwhile, I now have TWO MOTU plugins that won't run as standalone apps)

This is what is happening with my machines:
G5: M5v2 not opening, Ethno and MSI opening.
MBP: M5v2, Ethno and MSI all not opening.
Now I don't usually use standalone, but I know that M5 opened on both machines yesterday as I was troubleshooting something else.

Version 2.0.1 has fixed my problem in Mach Five 2, but now the problem has spread to MSI, and it is still not fixed. What on earth has happened to these things?
Anyway, if you have the same problem, download the update for version 2.01. That's got me up and running again.
Thanks, MOTU!

You probably just need to uninstall/reinstall MSI. Mucking around in the application package probably didn't help much. Use the MSI installation disc to uninstall, then reinstall; then download and install the latest MSI update from motu.com.Shooshie wrote:Version 2.0.1 has fixed my problem in Mach Five 2, but now the problem has spread to MSI, and it is still not fixed.
