syncing DP with PTle. An advice

Post by claudio_61 »

Hi, I'm trying to syncronize via MTC (30 fps) Dp and PT le (7.3). The two computers are communicate via MIDI over lan. In my idea (because I have a G4 mac... very slow for VI), I would compose, edit and play MIDI in DP and recording the audio tracks (VI in this case) in another computer where I've installed PT Le 7.3. I've so tested the system recoring many track of the same MIDI track (C3 note in quarter note for many measure as a metronome). Dp as master send MIDI data to PT configurated as slave. I have test that the different audio tracks in PT have different delay time. They don't begin in the same moment (I consider naturally some MIDI and audio latency) but some is earlier or later between them. That discrepance is a Sync problem or a MIDI Over Lan one? Usin a MIDI patchbay I can resolve that problem or I cannot work in sync between two computers? With a Midipatchbay is the sync very stable and precise or I have the same problems as Mol. Someone has my problem? many thanks

Claudio, if I understand your setup correctly, let me offer a different approach.

If you just want to compose, edit and play MIDI on the DP system, you don't need to have the PT system recording until you're done with the composition. You can record, edit and play and use the remote PT system as a VI host (transport stopped) and just listen. There would be no need for sync during the composition process.

When you're done and ready to record the output of the VIs to audio, you could easily export a standard MIDI file from DP, import into PT and hit record. Again, no need for sync.

You won't get sample accurate sync with MTC. I'm not sure what guarantee you'll get about the DP and PT systems being located at the same moment in the timeline with MTC over MOL, but it'll never be better than a single frame (about 30ms) which is pretty big for syncing audio.

Hope this helps.

of course... You have clarify me the problem. I just export the MIDI file then bounce in Pt. I would skip this passage but as you write...is impossible for the timing. Many thanks for your suggertion.
