Get M-Tron by G-media (distributed by M-Audio). Best deal is the entire G-Force Future Retro pack ($300), which includes a minimoog, an ARP Odyssey, and an OSCAR emulation.

The M-Tron includes every sound that Genesis ever did, as well as the sounds from Pink Floyd, Radiohead, and other famous mellotron users.

You will not find a more complete library anywhere -- especially for only $79! Literally ALL of the famous mellotron players past and present contributed their sounds to this soft synth.

I just have to restart this thread with a big ole' bump.

I just purchased a 1963 Gibson LG0 Acoustic and M-Tron. I feel complete. Although the M-Tron has more presets (aka Tape Banks) then I will ever use, I have gravitated towards at least half a dozen, and they are classics. Gone forever are the days of trying to piece together Mellotron samples from the internet and editing them together for Kontakt. This thing rules and sounds amazing.

I especially love the MK2 flutes (Strawberry Fields Forever), with a little less attack and a little longer release time, as well as the Megatron Strings, and Cello + Strings, plus assorted choirs.

Wow. Ain't you lucky to have landed one of those! Congratulations! :-)

Had you ever tried Squid's Tron collection from Sonic Reality? They are all full samples from several classic trons, which you could probably load into your Miroslav engine: http://www.esoundz.com/details.php?ProductID=220

Would be curious to know if your results of recording the real thing would surpass the quality of those samples. Knowing that you like to reamp, you could probably get some cool sound variations out of that baby, and add some delicious room ambience.

Does the thing have a regular quarter inch output? Or would you mic a built-in speaker?

+1

I love it, and use it A LOT! Mellotrong strings and brass and such make lots better and alive than sampled perfect strings/brass, or makes a good companion with sampled stuff to make things feel more "real".

LOL. That's funny. I read the words 1963 and M-Tron followed by the words Tape Banks and I thought you had purchased the real item.

I was secretly seething with envy... but now I don't feel so bad.

I'll have to check out the M-Tron collection at some point. At the moment I have the Sonic Reality collection of M-Trons, Chamberlins, Optrons and Orchetrons. I am quite pleased with them. Probably a lot easier to use than the real thing. Higher on my list is to find myself a '60s Wurlitzer. That'll make me very happy. :-)
