Question Mark in Finder Windows?

Post by buzzsmith »

Just noticed the question mark to the right of the task bar buttons within the Finder.

Did a Mac Help search which revealed nothing.

If I click on it, I get "The item cannot be found." message with an OK button.

Just curious...

My guess is that you had something mapped there on the tool bar that's no longer available.

You'll get the same question mark if you drag an application to the Dock, creating a Dock icon, and then delete that application later. The next time you click on the Dock icon, you'll get the question mark, which is telling you, as you've learned, "file not found."

Thanks, Jim.

I don't recall mapping anything there, but I just removed the "?" with the "Remove Item" command.

Jim's reasoning is sound, and I tend to agree with his diagnosis, FWIW. :D

I had this, it appeared after an un-successful spotlight search.
The "Remove Item" command worked for me too.
Thanks

You can also put things into the toolbar. I find it useful for opening files with secondary applications. For example, if I want to open a file with Quicktime, which is not the default, then I put QT in the toolbar and drag files to the icon.
