Unbelievable Crashing!!!!!!!!!

Post by dubaifox »

This is bizarre.

I had been using 4.12 with pretty good success with GPO on my Dual 1.25, OSX 10.3.4.

I upgraded to 4.52 and it was working OK with occassional crashes so I upgraded my OS to 10.3.7.

The program crashes on loading, crashes on playback, crashes on resting and when loading patch names, with or without GPO installed. Even on a session with only 1 MIDI track.

I spent 2 hours searching here and I have:

Repaired permissions 10 times
Removed iSight
Installed Lame
Deleted 4.52 and reintalled it
Trashed Preferences

I also have Waves 4.xx Installed(not active in the session)

Tried to go back to 4.12 and it was TOTALLY freaking out. Could not even click on some things to make them work.

ANYBODY have any advice?

A huge Pro Tools session with Reason and Kontact plug-ins sessions still seem to work fine?!?

I think it is a DP problem with OSX.
Going crazy to get to work.

You should update to OSX 10.3.8, as I have had no problems running DP w/ Live 4 and a ton of soft synths and plugs on this platform. See if that cures the problem.

When you updated OSX did you use the combo installer, or the single 10.3.7 installer? If it was the latter you may have missed some crucial system parts. There's nothing wrong with the pairing of 10.3.7 and DP 4.5x. You could try installing 10.3.8 but if you do make sure you have the combo installer (available on the Apple site). Your system may or may not be salvageable at this point, but it's worth a try before reinstalling.

Thanks for the help guys.

Yes, I did use the combo installer.

I wanted to hold off 10.3.8 as it is not "Officially" approved by Digidesign, but some say they are using it no problem.

What can I do to "salvage" my system? This sounds ominous. Other things seem to work OK. Like I mentioned a huge Pro Tools session that works fine with all kinds of Plug-ins.

Will try going up to 10.3.8. Should I use the Combo even though I already have 10.3.7?

Should I run Disk Warrior?

i had problems big time but it was the much lamented spinning beach ball after recording audio. i disabled beat detection and background processing and my problems have gone away. of course i don'y have beat detection but hopefully it'll all work in the next version. maybe try this and good luck.

Thanks for the tip.

DP just crashes when it sits there. No spinning ball, just "Unexpectedly Quits"

I doubt 10.3.8 will solve the problem but if you try it, yes, use the combo.

Disk Warrior sure couldn't hurt. Zapping the PRAM is always worthwhile when things get weird for no obvious reason.

The next thing I'd do is remove all 3rd party plugs and see if the problem persists. If it does not, add the plugs back and weed out the offender.

The other thing I'm wondering is if you need to update some part of PT since updating the system, particulary if DP is the front end for PT hardware. Either way there could still be a conflict. I'm not a PT user so I don't know much about it but make sure the correct DAE version is installed etc.

I have heard of Zapping the P-Ram but how do you actually do this?

Thanks!

hi folks

To zap PRAM, you need lots of fingers- hold down apple+option+P+R when starting up your Mac and until you hear the startup sound twice.

I have also had similar problems with crashes using DP and will follow the advice given in this thread- hope it helps! Will report back!

go back to 4.12 as many of us have - too many issues to deal with - to many hassles - no work can get done so go back to default and get the work done - eh?

I actually tried loading up 4.12 but it was acting VERY strange.

Could this have something to do with having loaded 4.52?

Should I have uninstalled 4.52 it before I tried?

Should I have unistalled 4.12 before I installed 4.52?

So confused.............

How do you uninstall?

As a test, I just spent an hour mixing a large Pro Tools session with Reason and Kontack drums without a single hiccup.

Going to try DP 4.52 now and see if zapping the p-ram did anything for it.

Have disk warrior on hand, but I don't think anything is wrong with my system!

STAY TUNED!!

personally - after deinstalling 4.52 or whatever there seems to bit a few residual glitches that never existed before - a la windows machine like environments - and tech didn't want to know about this either - but overall 4.12 has been much better and wher I am staying for a long time to come. before I never had one glitch with 4.12 - but since a few anomalies - that could be remnants of the upgrade affecting the older version 4.12 - but 4.12 still works overall quite fine. and faster too....

Unexpectedly quit after 15 minutes of light work.

Don't want to run Disk Warrior because everything else seems fine.

(or should I.....)

What is the best way to uninstall?

I have both 4.12 and 4.52 on my computer.

Thanks for the help everyone!!

Don't be frightened out of using 4.5.2. For many of us it's the most stable DP that's ever been released.

Yes, you should check your drive with DW or Drive Utility. Keeping your head buried in the sand if there's a problem will only set you up for the big crash down the road. That said, I strongly recommend that you back up any work you care about before attempting a repair. Also, in Drive Utility take a look at the S.M.A.R.T. status for the drive.

Have you removed 3rd party plugs as I suggested?

As for uninstalling and reinstalling: If you've been reinstalling without deleting MAS, you really haven't accomplished anything. Before you abandon 4.52 you might want to give it a try. In addtion to deleting the program itself do a finder search for any files that contain the string "mas" or "motu" and delete them. You must also trash all the Motu plugins, both AU and MAS. That will insure that all the system level items are gone.

The thing is you have already installed .52 and the core, hidden files are there for good. Even if you remove what you think is all of the .52 files your screwed.

I had to backup, format and reinstall everything to get it back to normal. I currently run 4.5.1 and I will never go to .52 ever again.

There are many who feel the need to chime in and tell you .52 runs great for them.

To those who do I can only say, everybody uses DP differently and therefor your mileage may vary.

Best of luck.
