Yeah, that last QTime update sucked. I never did install it or 10.4.10. <whew!>cuttime wrote:Please post here and wherever else is applicable.

In addition to QT, there is also an iTunes update and there have been two Security updates recently.
While people may be less interested in iTunes, evidently the updates were to fix some security loophole there, so I'm wondering if the QT update and the general security update are not all associated with one another.
On the one hand, doing one update without the other may cause problems. On the other hand, I agree that the quantity of bugs seen with so many updates in such a short span of time is increasingly troubling. Doing any of these updates in whole or in part have proven too often to bring an otherwise stable DAW system to its knees all too easily.
Apple is also tampering with QT 7.2 to include iPhone support, which brings a whole new layer of questions to the table. Too much, too new, too soon imho.

Funny you should say that: this was the first time ever I'd considered getting XP for my MacPro. I'm still a long ways off from doing it, but it bothers me that the concept even came to mind.mcgwd wrote:Apples days of "can do no wrong" are over, although my new SR MBP is great despite the naysayers on forums.I feel Apple is over being a computer company, its about media gadget superiority. Its a sad day when I actually enjoy WinXP on my MBP

Yeah, i've been a longtime supporter/fan of Apple and its slowly coming to an end.The great news is that being cross platform is a bonus, but XP certainly feels better than it ever has.No mac/pc war is intended just that my opinion.QT 7 is having problems on XP too, so Apple is really irritating me.

In the FWIW department...
The "new" computers are very cool. For myself, I am stuck in the dark ages with a lowly Dual 2.0 G5 with a meager 4 GB of RAM and about 1T of hard drive space.
A big part of the disappointment people are experiencing comes from the PR hype and resulting expectation. We all want a "no wait state" but it really isn't a problem if it takes 35 extra seconds to process a two hour sound file. Does it?
Another factor is the release of "updates" which feeds the "I want the latest and I want it now" mentality that the marketing people have instilled in us - I have also experienced that.
The problems with Apple really started with the Intel machines. Yeah, they're fast, but they are not anywhere near as reliable as the PPC machines. Add to that the software has yet to catch up (maybe MAYBE MachFive will in a few days. Maybe not...)
So perhaps Apple has, in fact, shot themselves in the foot? With all the intrigue of a good political mystery, Apple continues to issue bad Intel-ligence, false claims, hyped benchmarks, misguided territory acquisition (iPhone) and now, with the latest QTime release, an outright lie in terms of credibility. All this lead by a somewhat smug, and a bit too full of himself leader.
The only choice some of us have at this point it to defect. Some go to Vista. For myself, I'll stick with my PPC as lang as it processes. But I dread the day I have to get a new laptop or desktop computer. It will be a very tough call for me if the powers that be don't get their •••• together. Maybe I'm wrong. I just have a gut feeling...

Granted, we're 18 months into the whole Intel era and while that's not a lot of time in the history of home computing, it was more than enough time for Apple to revise the hardware 2-3 times per model. It was certainly enough time for them to get the OS figured out.
I sooner think that it has more to do with all kinds of silliness they are doing in preparation for Leopard. Not since the changeover to Puma have there been so many problems. If these Tiger preps are any indication, I fully anticipate Leopard to come in like a lion (angry and unhappy for DAW users). It's going to be a bumpy ride.
For my part, I'm going back to 10.4.8 and staying there.

I'm on 4.9 and it seems fine. Why 4.8?Frodo wrote:...

Because 10.4.8 came with my machine. There were enough complaints about 10.4.9 to keep me from even trying it. What I'm experiencing now are strictly DP behaviors which occur on 10.4.8, 10.4.9, and 10.4.10.
Also because I think the latest versions of the plugins I'm using were released during the 10.4.8 era, and I'm curious to find out if that makes a difference for the better. 10.4.8 is rock solid on my G5, so it seems to be an all-around good place to start over.
MLC's avatars get increasingly distracting!!!
