Hard2Hear or another builder can answer more fully, but I'd guess the actual "core" OS will be similar in that regard. The difference may be more in how many add-ons and features are bundled in each and what the install defaults are (there's also that crap that nags you about hardware ID's and serial protection  ). Get acquainted with XPLite (www.litepc.com) and the PowerToys "TweakUI" thing and you should be able to get a pretty tight system under either one (Norton Ghost is another "must have").

Take Care (and someone please correct that if it's wrong 8) )

In my experience XP pro (especially the Corporate edition) is clearly more stable! Then again i could be wrong.....................

There is absolutely no stability difference between the two.

XP Pro gives you:
-more advanced networking functions (enterprise rollouts, offsite connectivity, more)
-Support for 2 physical processors (Xeon, dual Opteron systems)
-Support for using the "3GB switch"

There are a few other things that are different about the two, but these are the biggest 3 applicable to a pro audio user. About 75% of our workstations get XP Home.

Thanks all!

Sounds like I'm "home"-word bound. I'm gonna run a single processor machine that won't be networked to anything. ...I'm a mac guy and I'm just gonna try this for fun.

dual XEAN home vs. pro

Post by LeviGawron »

HI.

My system runs on dual processors 2x3.2Ghz (XEON) and I use XP HOME.
Do you mean that I don't the full power using xphome, rather using xp pro?

this is news for me.

whoa! As far as I knew, home didn't support multiple processors. Is your machine running on just 1?

XP HOME VS. XP PRO

Post by LeviGawron »

To be honest I don't know. How can I check if I'm running on two processors or just the one?

All I know is that I got the XEON dual processors and XP Home.

replied to your pm.

I'm suprised XP Home would even install on a multiprocessor system. I'm positive, though, that it will only report and use one of the processors.

To check processor usage, go to task manager under the "performance" tab. You will have a seperate box for each processor in the system. On my Dual Quad Xeon systems, there are 8 boxes. Pretty neat looking.

LOL can you imagine 5-years from now we'll look back and say "WHAT? Only 8-processors??? How did you ever manage?!?"
Thank you,

Hahahahaha... guess we'll look back and say " remember back in the days when we used processors!?".

I'll check the dualprocessors vs. XPhome later today and post my findings.
