Crash when installing Adobe Reader

Post by kinnylandrum »

This is a particularly vexing problem I have had on my iBook G4 for years. I cannot upgrade Adobe Reader beyond 6.0. Everytime I try to install reader 8.1.0 (this also happened with any version of 7) it gets all the way to the end of the installation process and crashes.

I suspect some kind of conflict with something music related, only because I can't find ANY mention of this on Adobe's web site nor on the web.

I will say the system on the iBook was migrated via Apple's migration assistant from my G4. When I got my G5, I just copied everything I needed from my G4 and reinstalled stuff rather than using migration assistant, and my G5 is fine. I installed reader 8.1.0 and it works great (much faster starting than 6). I would love to get 8 on my laptop but I can't for the life figure out how to do it.

I hope some of the geniuses here can help. :)

There was some funky upgrade procedure I recall, but I think it was version 4... I'll try to find it... A HA!

" Delete all traces of Acrobat 4 per Tech Doc #323837. Rebuild your desktop, then copy the Acrobat 5 installer files to your hard drive and run the installer with your 4.0 CD in the CD drive." Indeed, this is consistent with the advice we noted for a Photoshop upgrade. "

That's all I have (saved it as a text file). But I remember having to do this every time I upgraded a system from version 4. This is from the the MacFixIt.com site several years ago.

Hope that helps. Not exactly your problem, but may be worth a try.

Is there any reason you need to use Adobe Reader over Preview. Preview is faster, more stable and has a much smaller footprint.

Even though I have Acrobat Pro for creating content, I still use Preview as my primary PDF viewer.

Preview won't let you search text. That's really important if you are using the DP PDF manual :)

Yes actually there is. If you make a PDF in Sibelius by using Save as PDF and then open that file in Preview, it looks squashed, like when the margins are wrong. However, this same file looks fine in Reader. I have to convert an entire broadway score I did in Sibleius into PDF and want it to look right. And I might add that reader 8 opens a lot faster than 6 and 7, probably as fast as Preview.

I really appreciate this help but it doesn't seem relevevant to Reader 6 or 8. In particualr I don't have an Acrobat CD.

The only reason I think this might be related to some kind of odd preference or something, possibly music related, is that I find NOTHING about this on the Internet and it has been true that I can't install anything greater than 6 without it crashing. But everything works fine on my G5, so it must be some strange conflict. I just wish someone knew what this was.

Hi

I just installed Adobe Reader 8.1. I have PowerBook 1.5GHz, OS X 10.4.4.
Installing worked fine.

I downloaded it here:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/i ... eader.html

Quote:

System Requirements
- Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later
- 110MB hard disk space
- Safari 2.0.2 or higher

Thank you, Jarok, but this is precisely the installer I have. I have been in touch with Adobe about this and even they can't find the problem. I now know it's not really the installer, but Reader itself that crashes immeditately after it tries to start. Since it works fine on my G5, the only solution I can see would be to completely install the system on my iBook. And since I can use both Preview and Reader 6 without problems, I'm not about to do this just to use Reader 8. So that's where I'm at now. If anyone else has any possible solutions to try, I'm willing.

Text search depends on how the PDF was created. PDFs made using image files obviously cannot be searched for text. Those produced from text files can. I use text search in Preview all the time (when it's available, which is more often than not).

Kind regards.
