problem didn't dissapear yet....

Post by quezbor »

thanks for the suggestion but I get the noise with no audio interface or firewire drives. I only use the built in mac digital output. The problem actually improves with my firewire interface. Rebooting the computer temporarily helps the problem on some files.

I think it's a firewire problem. For the heck of it.. Try to run DP without anything hooked up to the firewire ports (not even hard-drives).

I have a PCI system, and as far as I remember I haven't run into this problem on my audio rig...

I DO know I've ran into the problem on another machine with just a hd and some speakers hooked up.....

On the other hand.. I might just be imagine it..

I noticed this almost immediately with version 5 last year.
I do lots of editing and can find no rhyme or reason to it's occurrance.
Sometimes it's there, sometimes not, sometimes in one place, other times multiple places. Sometimes shows up in a bounce, other times not. Very odd but seems to me was introduced with DP5, as I never had this problem with prior versions. Seems to occur more with imported audio files, than natively recorded files.
I don't even bother with MOTU support because they never read/listen to your descriptions carefully and their stock answer always seems to be - make a new user profile - which is extrememly inconvenient. I mostly rely on this board for help - and usually find the answer.
For this problem, I usually just restart or something and can usually end up with a bounce with no static eventually. Very annoying.

The static problem seems to be on vacation. Even older projects that had the problem don't have it now. Nothing really changed in my setup other than the regular osx updates. Did this problem stop for anyone else?

Same here.... this is insane. I heard the sizzling sound a little bit while working yesterday, but I can't recreate it anymore. It used to be rampant, now it's mysteriously gone, for the most part.

The only thing I've done differently recently is upgrade from OS 10.4.9 to 10.4.10. Perhaps this is an OSX issue?

I'm having similar problems, too. Since I can't add much to the complaint or to the solution, I'll just keep an eye on this thread. Hopefully, an answer will be forthcoming. It's very inconvenient to have musicians wait during a session for the computer to reboot.

I just experienced this with my client's system. It appeared immediately after we connected a FW800 hard drive.

Luckily this drive also had a 400 port, and after switching to FW400 and restarting the anomalies have disappeared.

fwiw, I'm not using any fw800 drives, only a usb2 and mostly for backup. And I'm pretty sure I was not working on projects residing on the drive when the noise bursts occured.

the plot thickens...

cheers

i think i have a possible work-around for you guys..i loaded in a 6 minute audio track directly from a cd and brought it into the sequence on a new track..at this point i highlighted about 1 minute of audio in the middle of this 6 minute piece and did a command-y (split audio) and then copied this 1 minute piece of audio down onto it's own track..now, when i would play this 1 minute piece by itself, i would get this low volume static at the front of the soundbite (the first 20-30 seconds) but nowhere else in the soundbite would the static happen..the fix that seemed to immediately work for me was to highlight this 1 minute soundbite and do a "merge soundbites" command on it..DP now creates a new fresh version of this same audio in the "audio files" folder and the problem seems to permanantly go away for this 1 minute soundbite...now, if i was to then turn around and start cutting up this 1 minute soundbite, the problem would probably happen again for those new smaller soundbites, but i would just highlight and merge again, and carry on with my life until this problem is solved in a later DP update..let me know if that works

tech support

Post by quezbor »

Has anyone contacted tech support about this problem? What did they suggest and did it work? I contacted them months ago, they told me to create a new user. Didn't work. I'm going to try again with these people since my last tech support ticket expired.

it will be interesting to know what they say this time...

this has to be a software issue because it's showing up in the bounce file, correct? or could it still be a hardware/electrical issue?

i wonder if those experiencing this have a common problem in their physical setup?

I went into the Hardware Setup/Studio Size (I'm on a different computer and don't have the terminology memorized.) and lowered the buffer size and the priority. I'd have to go back and check, but I think I set it at 128 and Medium priority.

So far, I've had one uninterrupted session and no noise! Several sessions remain, so cross fingers.

any word from motu on this?
I'm running DP 5.12 on 10.4.10.... and i've been having this issue on and off for over a year.... long before 10.4.10, and DP 5. It seems to happen when i'm layering tracks that are extremely similar to eachother.... so, recording a few bounces from Reakto of similar sounds. Or recording a violin line 4 or 5 times, and layering it. Does anyone have a fix? or this just one more reason for me to consider getting rid of DP?
thanks.

This is still an issue with 5.13. I don't see any posts after the release of 5.13 so I thought I'd bump this thread. ....anyone have any solutions yet?
