I'm a little calmer now...just wished that I'd have known from the start, to not buy one ilok only, thinking that I wouldn't have issues with it. 2 are apparently required. I've accepted this and will move on using these plugs as there really are no alternatives. At least URS has a temp licence waiting for my new ilok. No issue there, they got back to me almost immediatly, so I'm happy with their level of support. The next few plugs I'm looking at are ilok only as well... if I want the plugs, I must accept the ilok. Such is the way of things.
Regards, Rob
that's why I'm avoiding ilok... this is really not fair.
what's really happening is that the software company is FORCING you to buy someonelse's products to use theirs.
If you are using DAW software of any kind, is it unfair that the company making the software is "FORCING" you to buy a computer in order to use it? C'mon guys - this is just getting more and more silly - you act as if a companies' use of iLok is some sort of scheme to get you to buy more dongles from a company they have no financial interest in, and on the contrary, they probably pay companies like iLok themselves to license the copyright protection technology. The conspiritorial tone of such statements is not only unwarranted, it's laughable. If you don't like plug-ins that use dongles, then don't use them. Would such lengths be necassary for companies to take to protect themselves in a "fair" world? No. Do we live in a "fair" world? No. In order to sustain product development at the rate demanded by the end user, companies have to find some way of stopping or slowing the lost revenue from people using cracked/stolen software.
Don't be silly brother, we're talking about "you have to buy a alarm system in order to drive your car" or something like this.
I don't support iLok protected software, I did once but I don't anyomore, so, I'm satisfied with what I have today, but like always, I'm trying to have something better, but sometimes I face an iLok plugin and just have to pass it.

That's your choice and good for you for maintaining such integrity. I trust/hope that you also avoid cracked/stolen plug-ins with the same consistency as well.

I have tons of Plugs and VI's ..............but none use Ilock, the only one's I ever had that required it were Waves & Bomb Factory(which I stopped using when OSX happened......)the Idea of a USB key scares me....... if you lose or break it you have a real headache to contend with.
But the sad reality is each company has to protect their product with all of the cracks out there. If I have to make a choice on an amazing Plug or VI that uses Ilock,I would probably cave in and get it.But if I have a choice I will not go with a Ilock based Plug

Also, I should note that two iLoks are not required - it seems that Rob may have had the misfortune of getting a bum key, and I hope he goes to every effort to get reimbursed or credited for the cost of the key - however inconvenient it may be to do, I am sure there avenues to report his problem to the company in question. I have two iLoks only because one came with an MBox bundle and have had neither fail ever. This is not to say it doesn't happen or that the system is perfect, but to imply that iLok has somehow devised a plan to make sure every other iLok key is defective so they'll sell twice as many is laughable (sorry to keep coming back to that word). Now, if I were Rob and I reported the defective key to iLok and got a "Tough sh*t" reply, I could see being totally justifiably angry the company, avoiding using any products that required the key, and sharing my story with all potential iLok users in earshot as well as the companies who choose iLok over other copyright protection means. But as it stands now, Rob's story is an isolated bummer - no more, no less - and I hope it gets resolved fully for him.
Hello folks,
No conspiracy theory here... In fairness, I'd like to say ilok willl be replacing the key at no charge. Now, I'm sorry if you find this laughable, but here's my beef... ilok sold me a faulty product. URS's plug requires this to work. How the hell can you tell me that I (or anyone else) do not require a second ilok, when the product I purchased from URS cannot be used without it... WTF am I supposed to do? ...not work on my mixes until ilok has completed their 'rma' process. The crux of the issue is that I bought a faulty piece of gear. Due to this screwing up, I cannot use the plug in that I BOUGHT and am ENTITLED to use. I can understand the need for copyright protection, and I don't want the jacka** pirate down the street having free access to the plug that I just paid for. Having said that, I'm now paying, not for a plug in, but to keep pirates from cracking the software. Once (for the original ilok) was obviously acceptable to me. Twice was not.... and the fact that I had no choice in the matter was not. There needs to be a better balance so that paying customers are not being shafted here. Perhaps a temp version without an ilok, until mine gets repaired??? Yes it's only 40.00, but it's a principal issue. I'm big on principal... I bought a faulty piece of of gear, and then was forced into (if I wish to continue my mixes...) having to buy another piece of the same thing.... see the issue???

Rob - I wasn't calling what you were saying or your experience at all laughable and I definately feel for your situation and I'm glad that your issue was resolved. I just find some of the responses to your issue by some others funny.

Hey Dubnick, yes I understand.... thanks for your understanding. I'm posting this to let others know that if you plan on using ilok only software, save yourself the frustration and get a second ilok right off the bat... and I guess the temp idea without ilok kid of defeats the purpose. It's just unfortunate that honest people have to jump through hoops becasue of piracy.... not fair to the developers either.... just a sucky situation all around. Thanks for your post.

it doesn't seem like his response was actually any different than anyone else's, as far as I can tell.

he doesn't like the fact that he bought a product, but had to buy another companies product for their protection. the second product was faulty, so now he can't use the original product he paid for without paying more, in addition to the time and frustration. all for something that he has no interest in to begin with.

I'm not trying to put words in his mouth, but that's the message I got from it.

this follows my observations; people think everything is different, that the normal rules don't apply when it comes to computers (only I usually put it more rudely). if we were talking about another product besides software there wouldn't even be a discussion.

let's say you bought a book, but it's encoded and you can't read it unless you buy a separate decoder, which is locked to you and you have to carry with you, and if you breaks you have to buy another one or you can't read your books. after all, someone might copy those books and cut into profits, so it's your responsibility to do something about it. it's just the price we all have to pay to stop the book pirates.

I personally don't think ilok is any worse than any other system in principal, except that you have to pay for it. I just rarely use any of my ilok plugs because of the hassle.

well, the fact I hate this kind of copy protection doesn't mean I want free illegal stuff.

I'm with kgdrum here.

2 things really bother me with ilok

1 - it probably spreads all kind of stuff around my system
2 - if it breaks, I'll be "unusable" 'till I get another one and do all the process with authorizations.

Just to clarify.... I knew full well before I purchased the urs product that i'd be using ilok protection. I didn't like the fact that pace doesn't replace a new, broken ilok without all the schmozle or that there is not a better plan to help out someone whose ilok has broken so soon after purchase. The diference in our responses is that I try to steer away from the use of analogies, be they wild or applicible, and stick with the facts as they are. This is what dubnick found laughable (if I may be so bold...). Thanks for your posts, your views are valued.

oh I loves me a good analogy, it's like a little story that teaches us "a is to b as c is to d".

what I did find funny, or kind of shocking, is that a guy would reply to someone he doesn't know, and stop just short of accusing them of stealing just because they said they didn't like the ilok. wow.
if that was me I would be a little put off by that.

the replacement plan for ilok does sort of seem like a slap in the face though. if you pay extra they will promptly fix your problem. if you don't they make you wait, even though it's their defective product and they obviously CAN fix it quickly if they want. what a racket that is.

fortunately I don't really care about that much about what's on mine. actually I'm not even sure what is on mine besides machfive, and I don't use it very much because it's on the ilok.

I have 2 iloks (one came with machfive, which is the way it should be) but I can't see paying for the insurance.

we have to agree in something...

I agree that ALL iLok dependant plugs should come with your own iLok... so you'll have a bunch of spare iLoks

I like DUY's DaD Tape, Magic Spectrum LE, and MagicEQ LE. If only just to take the sound somewhere where I wouldn't think of on my own and then shape it from there. These plugs do some serious stuff but they're also just plain fun to use and mess around with. All work in DP as AU or MAS.

I find that new computers tend to be in the forefront of problems. It takes 6 months to a year to get them ironed out. Then after about 3 years they start becoming a problem again. Computers are best in that range where cars are best -- from 1 year old to 3 years old.

iLoks aren't bad. Just take care of them and don't let them get stolen. They beat the heck out of having to re-authorize everything.

Avoid WAVES products. Only Waves has made using iLok harder than hard-drive authorizations. Supposedly, you don't have to re-authorize, but I'm always having to call Waves and have them reset my iLok, and do all kinds of things over the phone with them. It's a mess, but only because Waves made it so. Once you get it set up, it's fine until you have to change something. Waves is just the worst company in the business as far as authorizations are concerned. I've got about $400 worth of Waves software that even Waves has not yet figured out how to authorize on my system yet, and that's after 4 months!
