But, with a few exceptions, none of us really know each other. Our names are an arbitrary collection of words, the internet a bastion of anonymity. I could call myself Chuck Melovich and you would have no idea that's my real name. Would you take me more seriously? How does using a handle undermine the message? Shouldn't our credibility be established by what we write?

Unless we've actually met, or know of each other through some other means, I don't see how the conversation here could be anything but anonymous.

I'm Chuck Melovich, the real Chuck Melovich. All you other Chuck Melovichs are just imitating. So, won't the real Chuck Melovich please stand up, please stand up, please stand up.

This is probably a whole 'nutter thread. But it IS different. Clearly, some of us (James, Brad and I, for example) ARE who we say we are. We have websites, pictures, gigs you can go to, etc. That lends a certain authenticity, if not credibility, to our persons. Maybe that doesn't really mean much to you, but to me, it is extremely important. It REALLY matters.

The www is, in fact, largely anonymous, for whatever reason. Until you reveal who you truly are IN FACT, you remain for all intents and purposes, 'just another unknown quantity' (at least as far as I am concerned.) I say this with no disrespect sir (madam?) but for all intents and purposes, anonymity equates to the same thing as non-entity in any tangible sense.

Put another way, I could easily find a way to call James and invite him over for a wild weekend (and almost did :) ). Brad (if we REALLY got into a nasty debate) could just as easily fly out to Burbank and punch me in the nose. And I've chatted with Shooshie a little (a few years ago) about maybe playing in my work in Dallas (a gig that never got scheduled).

These are tangible, real people. So if one of them says to me "you're acting like a fool" I take it much more seriously than bootymaster telling me to cool my jets.

Again, I don't resent anon www users and I read what you (and they) say with interest, especially here. But when it starts to get a bit personal and critical, I just don;t take the comments quite as seriously.

But I did answer you, so clearly, you exist.

Hmmm... bootymaster. Maybe I should reregister my username here. :)

THAT'S IT. I"VE HAD IT. I"M GOING TO GET SOME CHICKEN.

NOW!

I'll be at Gordon Biersch in Burbank for the next hour or so. I'll be sitting at the bar opposite the cash register watching ESPN. Whoever wants to join me, drop by. I'll even buy the first round, but you gotta be quick! And you have to tell me your real name (bring picture ID.)

(••••, Chrispick could actually take me up on this! :) ) Too far for James to drive - unless he's playin. LA tonight.

Hey, did anybody notice the last name of the composer in that MOTU promo piece? There's a certain amount of poetic justice when you're mentioned in a money-obsessed magazine like Fortune and you're last name is Banks...

Kind of like using your porn name. You know that one? You take the name of your first pet as your first name, and the name of the the first street you lived on as your last name and that is your porn name. So for me, depending on if you count MY first pet or the FAMILY's first pet, my porn name is either: Sandy 69 (or) Lucky Scooter.

Guess it depends on the script, but they both work for me.
