DP and LiquidMIx

For anyone who's interested (and using DP of course!) there is an update, V2 for Liquidmix.

So far the new features seem great, especially the hardware following the selected software plugin

Do you still need a separate Firewire card to effectively use Liquid Mix, or doers it play nice with other Firewire devices on the (shared buss) built-in Firewire ports?

I think Focusrite does recommend using LM on a separate firewire buss but I have used it number three in a firewire chain without any problems.

Yes, you need a separate FW card to run Liquid Mix. You "can" try running it on the same FW buss, and get lucky, but I would say, just spring for the 40 bucks or so and get a Firweire Card to run it on.

Even with luck holding, Liquid Mix is a buss hog, and is happiest when it has the buss all to itself.

Are PCIe Firewire cards down to $40 now? Last time I looked, they were running quite a bit higher. Thanks for the info.

I think they're higher for later model Macs. For my PPC Dual 2.3Ghz, I got a Belken FW card for 40 bucks plus shipping, but..I forget where. I think it was CDW.

For Dual and Quad Cores and Intel Macs, I believe the pices are somewhat higher. Maybe by 30 bucks or so, but certainly you can get one for less than 100 dollars.

What do you do if you have a Macbook? I use an external firewire harddrive for my sessions?

I was fortunate enough to meet with the top brass from Focusrite the other day, in fact they were kind enough to do a FishFry for us

Yummy! Phil Dudderidge is a pretty funny guy indeed, and much younger than I expected. While I can't tell you about some new products coming down the pipeline until the fall, I think those of you that are Focusrite fans (such as myself) will be thrilled! Part of this is listening to their customers, which is the case here with V2 of the LiquidMix. Yeah, the hardware not following the plugin was a nightmare--probably the biggest thing they fixed. As to the question about the dedicated firewire bus, YES you really need to do that as it does take A LOT of bandwidth!! So if you're on a MacBookPro, you'll need a Cardbus Firewire adaptor for a second bus.

Do you have any issues concerning the bandwidth using the LM with a MBP?

I'm myself planning to buy a MBP SR. Does anyone else have any problems with using the LM with a MBP?

I just installed this and it seems to introduce some bad behavior: it adds about 2 seconds from hitting play to when the sequence plays. Also the meters on the LM hardware are showing the pre delay-compensation levels. So they're about two seconds ahead of what I'm actually hearing. ...anyone else have the same experience?

I have my buffer at 256 and LM's Minimum Latency at 264

And even if this playback issue turns out to be something wrong w my system - honestly I'm less and less impressed w LM. It sounds good, but the GUI is clunky and unintuitive. The UAD sounds at least as good and is far more usable IMO. I'll probably unload my LM when I get a chance.

Wow sorry to here that. I'm on a dual 1.8 G5 and the LM is running without a hitch. I agree that UAD sounds just as good, I have 2 cards but I don't find the GUI in LM to be clunky. The combination of eq's and comps plus custom eq's make it a must have IMHO.

I guess clunky compared to the UAD'd be more accurate. It's never until I'm maxing out the UAD that I consider using the LM. Be nice if it came with skins of the units emulated.

Is there any way to rename the LM emulations? Because of copyright laws I guess Focusrite has to use alternate names for the emulations rather than the actual unit's name. Example: BritDesk = SSL. I can never keep track of what's what. ...for some reason they can say the real name in the manual. but not on the plugin itself. Go figure.
