Yes-- Drive Genius is emerging as quite the unsung hero. So funny-- I went to buy DW and had both DG and TTP in my arms. Uncertain of which, I only bought DW to have UB compatibility-- but it looks like DG will probably find its way home. PT is already in house.
To go back to Mr. Bourke's post, I just ran into this informative doc:

Indeed-- it's not life-threatening-- but it is truly annoying tap dancing around the clicks and crashes. Sometimes you just wanna do music.

Oh, well, I like to live dangerously and I applied this security update only to find that I can no longer open as a Stand Alone app, the MSI programFrodo wrote:Yes-- Drive Genius is emerging as quite the unsung hero. At least I can still access it trough DP as a plug-in without problems, but I already posted a TechLink at MOTU's place for them to know this is happening.

I downloaded the SecurityUpdate to my desktop and re-installed it but this time by booting in Safe Mode and only then proceeded to install it. After the reboot, MSI worked fine again... this only reassures the old adagio that says "Do not let Software Update install anything for you"

So funny-- Software Update is getting such mixed reviews-- either "great" or "never". We have no choice but to believe everyone since no single method is foolproof.
The one thing to be careful of is that all authorized dongles for any software should be removed before doing an OS update. And going to Safe Mode is a great idea.
I really like the word "safe" for some reason!

Wow! What a great thread!
Actual, useful, important, pertinent information!
I haven't heard the pops yet, but that may be because I keep my connected speakers at a pretty low volume (always at either the first notch, or muted). My audio interfaces have not caused any problems. I use a PCI-424e on my MacPro 2.66GHz dual duo, along with a firewire 896. All seem to be working.
(side issue, not related to this: MOTU is going to replace my PCI 424 under warranty, because it keeps getting lost in the MacPro. I have to swap slots for it to show up again.)
I have used Disk Warrior for a long time, but have not used it on the Intel machine. I suspect I need to buy a different version. The other software mentioned in this thread sounds pretty interesting. Well... not TT4. I've got that in my Applecare box, which I have not even opened!
Thanks for the great info folks. Keep up the good work!

Uh-Oh. I Forgot to remove the dongles from my USB hub when I ran Software Update. In fact, I've never removed them. Everything works, as far as I can tell. What are the problems to be on the lookout for?

Some people had issues with iLok auths getting corrupted after doing the update while the dongle was plugged in concurrently. That was an iLok first to my ears, but I've come to expect this sort of thing from Syncrosoft. Pulling out dongles and other peripherals during OS upgradiing has become sort of a Shire routine. I think our friend bigcityrecording went through this recently as well- and weathered the process of getting Altiverb, UAD-1e and other things reaithorized and running again. Seems that dongus interruptus was the way to avoid the problem.Shooshie wrote:Uh-Oh. I Forgot to remove the dongles from my USB hub when I ran Software Update. In fact, I've never removed them. I have always updated via SU and without pulling the iLok without problems until today, so following an advice from one of MOTU‘s TechNotes on which they suggest to re-install a Combo Update for 10.4.9 when trying to solve a problem of MSI not launching as Stand Alone, I decided to try the method and I re-installed just the today‘s security update and that solved the problem with MSI not opening, so I think I will convert to the "Safe installation fan club"HCMarkus wrote:I've never pulled the iLok either, and no problems with Software Update. Hey Frodo,
I have MacFixit on my Browser Bookmarks Bar. I have read many and learned some.

I think I'd better stop depending on innocent luck, and start avoiding things before they happen!

OS X 10.4.10 on Mac Pro with DP5.12 ••“ no problems.
Security Update 2007-006 using Software Update with Syncrosoft dongle plugged in and UAD-1e card/UAD-1 v4.7.0 installed ••“ no problems.
In theory (and in practice for most people), using Software Update to go from, say, 10.4.9 to 10.4.10 ••“ up ONE point ••“ is perfectly safe. However, using it to go from 10.4.8 to 10.4.10 (more than one point) is not a great idea. I always download and use the Combo Updates because I have three Macs to do. I keep them on file in case I ever have problems and need to downdate. I never have. And luck has nothing to do with it.
@ Shooshie: the version of TechTool that comes with AppleCare is really just a stripped-down reporting tool ••“ it's nothing like TechTool Pro.
Kind regards.
