Building Computers is Hard

Post by SixStringGeek »

I'm just whining - however - I've spent over 2 weeks trying to get an uber mac built to run my studio. I'm not done yet. I got the Mac Pro 8 core/monitor from Apple - no problem - then to avoid Apple's high ram/component prices I ordered 4 500G WesternDigital drives and 8G of ram from Memory2Go.

Memory is fine - easy to install - plug it in and bing - I've got 9G.

Drives are also dead easy to install, only one shows up DOA. Call Memory2Go and they tell me I need to contact WD for warranty replacement - they won't do it. WD has a turnaround time of 2 weeks. I'm so glad I paid for express shipping. :x In frustration I overnight ordered another one from Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-C ... B000FBSREK. I'll be selling a 500G WD drive in about 3 weeks I guess.

Hard drives usually fail young or outlive the computer. I've configured pairs of striped drives, then combined those into a mirrored set. I'll stick with that for the next couple months while I learn all the nifty VIs and the drives burn in. When I get to real work, I'll reconfigure to a 4 way striped raid.

I also added in a MaxConnect bracket to allow me to mount 2 more drives on one of the optical bays connected to the two spare SATA ports on the main board. (http://www.maxupgrades.com/istore/index ... uct_id=158)

One is the system drive, the other I will use as a dedicated samples drive for things like BFD and Ivory. The SATA ports are located in a nearly impossible location - resulting in a trip to the hardware store to get a pair of long handled curved needle nosed pliers. This does the trick (took most of a day to figure this out). Then I realize that the riser bracket to mount the optical drive is missing. After another day going round and round with the MaxConnect people, they finally ship me a new one. Should arrive tomorrow. Meanwhile, the optical is sitting on top of the computer so I can begin loading/authorizing software - which is its own special nightmare.

With a bit of luck, I should have a functioning computer by end of next week.

Are we havin' fun yet? I'm not sure... :?
