Updating studio computer, what road to go?

Post by FutureLegends »

Hey!

We're updating our old PowerMac G4 (dual 1.25) soon...
Question is to go with a used G5 or a Mac Pro... We currently have PCI-424, UAD-1 and PowerCore PCI and I think all those cards have to be updated to use with the Mac Pros... And that's probably ending at close to $1000 in just upgrading the cards! (PCIe-424 is $295). Not sure there's even an upgrade path for the UAD?
Going the used G5 road... Which models would work with all those cards the best?
Any other suggestions?

cheers

/Damon

go forward, not backwards....getting a G5 is going backwards, get the Intel-based machines.
Thank you,

I agree with Brad. If the cost of upgrading is too high, wait and save up your pennies. At this point, I wouldn't consider a used G5 an upgrade - just a little better machine which will be obsolete sooner than the Mac Pro.

Absolutely, totally go for the Mac Pro.

Also UA offer some kind of cross-grade if you buy PCI-e cards while owning PCI cards. At least they did when I switched earlier this year - it was a total surprise! Of course you can only spend it on their plug-ins but it is something to consider when budgeting - assuming this offer is still going.
