exporting MIDI tarcks

Post by timecode »

Hoping someone can help!
When I export MIDI tracks to use in other programs (cubase or Neauendo) from DP4.6 on mac
the track names do not go over, I'm exporting using the "save as" command and saving as standard MIDI file. I check the "include text"
files but it deosn't!!!

Thanks TC

I've had the same problem, even when saving as SMF1 (which supposedly preserves track names). It's been a real hassle when I do file exchanges with my collaborator who uses Sonar. When I was still using Yamaha hardware (Motif ES workstation and QY700 sequencer), I found that MOTU and Yamaha were at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of what got preserved or not when reading/writing from each format (even if using SMF1 vs. SMF0).

It's on my back burner (a rather large one, I might add!) of unsolved technical problems that I eventually need to solve. For now, I have switched back to just exchanging audio files during later stages of a song's development.

The biggest problem I have in DP is if I interleave audio and MIDI tracks. I hadn't posted this on the forum yet as I figured it HAS to work and that I just haven't spent enough time yet reading up on how it's done. Also I now have a hex editor so can start looking at these exported files to analyse what's wrong with them, vs. just shrugging when DP crashes on trying to load the MIDI file that I saved from it a minute prior!

I decided not to allow the convenience of MIDI export to mess up good project organisation, so refuse to switch away from having my MIDI tracks neatly grouped with their respective audio tracks (an n:m relationship, even if in most cases 1:1).

I may have gotten this to work once when exporting from DP into Finale. I'm not even sure *why* it worked at that time. It worked one other time when porting a SMF into Logic. Took me about 30 minutes to get over the shock, but I've never been able to get it to work again in 6-7 years of attempts.

In my case, those were the criteria which are always selected. No dice, except for twice...

It always works for me going from DP to Sibelius. I export in Format 1 and I don't check the 'track names as text' box.

Another thing I found through trial and error was that DP only exports the 'unlocked' track markers. So any hitpoints that you want to be transferred need to be unlocked before you export.

Hi, I'm considering making the switch to DP from Sonar. After reading this thread, Im concerned with exporting MIDI files from DP to buddies who use Sonar and having problems.

Does this problem exist on DP 5.12?

Hmmmm. Works fine for me exporting to good ol' Cubasis. Wondering what's not working here.
