Boy that is bleak. It confirms thought what is going on in all industries. As someone who works in pro video production as well, this is something that has been going on a long time as large production houses with staff, give way to smaller companies who hire freelancers and rent studio space and gear as needed per project.

Seems there isn't as much room at the high end any more. With very nice home recording and mastering studios out there, there's a cottage industry. Does anybody else remember back when a lot of the L.A. recording studios were pressuring for a crackdown on guys operating home studios against zoning, etc. Hard to compete with someone who isn't having to lease space, pay a small staff, carry liability, etc. etc.

yea makes sense that mastering houses are the first to go. they are cheaper to set up than live tracking rooms, and construction is easier.

i suppose the great live rooms will stay open for a while, that is until Altiverb 13 can make a snare recorded in my closet indistinguishable from a snare recorded in Ocean Way's Studio A....

Its true...the digital age is killing off the old ways. We all have our own studios now and can make records that some one in the 70s, 80s, heck even the early 90s could never have made at home. Still it sucks to lose them.

Er...when I go to the link you posted, James, I get the Sony home page and no reference to internet mastering. (Though I did get a full screen shot of Justin Timberlake that nearly made me spit-take my morning beverage.)

Am I missing something, or did they pull the offer?

And I was all ready to chuck them a tune just to see what happened. 99 bucks is barely a tank of gas for my guzzler truck.

::sigh::

Yeah... it's being redirected now. I guess it was a desperate "too little, too late" move.

I remember I once tried to coin some sort of phrase when I witnessed a business I worked for starting to go under. "The problem with desperation is it usually comes too late." It's human tendency to not be proactive but wait until there's a severe problem and then fight like hell uphill when it's too late. I've seen all sorts of wonderful efforts and ideas come to try and save a company and thought to myself it would have been marvelous if these things were done when the ship was on an even keel so to speak.

Another near spit-take! Have you any idea how hilarious that statement was?

Maybe I'm just punchy, still, being first thing in the morning, but there was something oh so true to my life about it. (It has the ring of a viral truism of the highest order, yet somehow you didn't succeed in coining it. But you did, see?)

I'll be stealing this Steeleism!
