also a g4 can run VIs ... my old set up with the dual 530 g4 i ran several simultaneously.... i used unity 2 for sampling , retro as1 for synths and my own max/msp patches for processing and synths ...... while playing several 5.1 surround tracks in dp3 .... so yes you can run VIs with a g4 ... of course this was all on os 9.1 and 1.5g of ram
in pushed that machine to its limits then. and when it starts to falter i change my work flow slightly... god freeze tracks is great right now

Well, no kidding. I could almost achieve time travel, world peace, and solve the Rubiks Cube in OS 9 on my MDD 867. All at the same time. While running Mach V, Retro As-1, and so on.Originally posted by pastiche27:

The new OS and all that comes with it are what weight down the G4. And even in OS9 you could "Freeze" tracks. Just bus and record it.
It's the processor demands that force latency into the picture and that's what kills VI's being used. That damned latency.
I sometimes think I could go another 10 years on this G4 if I went back to OS 9, and I would but dammit, I like OS X too much.

It's been about 1.5 years since I booted in OS 9. The last time I did I was totally blown away at the speed. The OS X GUI sucks up alot of horsepower. After that I never booted into OS 9 again because it made OS X feel painfully slow!
I'm running a Dual 1.42 2/ 2 GB RAM and Dual 10K RPM Drives (S-ATA Raptors). Even on small audio projects I need to keep the buffer at 1024. At 256 w/ 5 or 6 audio stereo tracks and 10 plugs or so, it's hitting 50% plus. I don't run any VIs, if I did, a G5 for sure. I dont' whether or not it helps reducing the overall processing load, but I'm using a 2408mk3. With buffer set to 1024 that same load bubble around 15% to 20%.
Even though the current rig can support everything gine, I'd like to move to a G5 just for quieter operation and hopefully reduced heat ouput. The 1.42 really warms up the room - and I don't mean that in a good way.

my G5 warms up my room as much as my old G4, so sorry, don't expect heat relief with a G5Originally posted by Bomberstudios:

There are rumors floating around that Apple will come out with a dual dual-core G5. That means you'll have four processors, two per processor core.Originally posted by ton:

Now, whether or not all four are going to be effectively used...we'll just have to wait and see. Then again, the rumor could be false. Makes buying a G5 harder though, doesn't it

From what I understand, the dual core was announced yesterday and should be shipping by this fall.
I am bewildered by all the statements regarding minimum computer requirements, as they are all 3x or 4x or more what I am using!
I have had very few problems using my iMac G4 800 MHz desktop w/ 384 Mb RAM. I am thinking of upgrading only because I want to start using soft samplers, not because DP itself is causing me grief. And I write heavily layered/orchestrated music with 16 or more stereo audio tracks. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Will a Dual Pro G4 adequately drive DP4?
1 gig G4 TiBook with DP4.6, Reason 3, Kontakt, some other apps. There are ways around processing power. Is it convenient? Yes. My productions are generally on the sparse side, but I've had to push my system a few times. With track freezing, bouncing, a touch of outboard, efficient sound design, much can be accomplished. Beautiful, complex productions have been done on less than what I'm using.

Ya'll won't believe this but I've been using DP 4.5 with an iBook G3 700. I haven't been using many effects and only 1 or 2 VIs but I'm able to track at least 10 or 12 tracks. Pretty crazy, but it's working great for me.
