OS9 and DP 3.1 Love it!!

Post by donreynolds »

I am having a ball with OS9.12 and DP3.1. It almost never crashes and is quite user friendly. I have a G4/1gig ram dual gig processor. I have run as many as 70 tracks with many plugs. It gets a little slow then, but then I bounce and am running again. I have wrote some (I feel ) beautiful pieces of music with thick vocals, etc, etc.

It just depends what level that you want to go woth it. It does everything and more that I would want to do with it. I can sequence my Triton in DP or I can run the Triton sequencer with DP..

I am not a professional, but I love songwriting and I do it for God. and I can record our band and come up with very decent recordings. I am sure it is not as good as many that are on this board, but we like it.

I am very leery about throwing a fly in the ointment, just to keep up.
If it aint broke don't fix it.

But I do really admire and respect the people on this board that are so good with the awesome program. I guess with thier skills, they need to keep upgrading to accomodate thier skill level.

thanks guys, i do learn a lot reading these posts.

God bless

I love os9 as well. What got me to upgrade was the beat detection engine and the auto latency compensation in 4.52.
If you don't need the extra features, it really doesn't make any sense to upgrade. I can't run NEAR as many tracks now but am going to purchase a sonnet duet 1.33 upgrade which should cure that problem.
Do you have a Christian band or what?

Same configuration here, with a G4 733. Absolutely great gear, DP3.1 has it all to do great production and you can match tempos and beats. It's gonna take time till M. Jobs is going to get another $ for a G5!
I agree with Don, great board, amazing power users who do a lot of good to the product!

I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone. Mostly what you hear on this board now is related to OSX / G5 and DP 4.xx. But the comments are great and I do learn a lot from this board. There are some DP geniuses out there!!! I stand in awe of you guys (and gals?)
Like i said, I am happy with what I have and it runs great with plenty of power/ speed. I would upgrade if I felt that I needed to. I would like to have a G5 though beacuse it is pster and quieter than mine, but I still want to use OS9 because antares has not upgraded Mic modeler. It seems that if you want to upgrade to newer platforms it is best to wait a couple of years so everybody can catch up and all the bugs are fixed. It is then cheaper also to do so because they have already came out with something else newer.
Yes Byron, I play in a Christian band. It is called Malachi. we've been together about 12 years. we play Christian rock, but we also do a lot of semi-acoustic praise and worship music. I started recording when I was around 8 years old using small reel to reels (ha), little did I know what it would all evolve to. God is good and he has blessed us with the technology to do at home what we could never do before. I have a lot of fun with all of this
I am from Middlesboro, Ky, about 60 miles from Knoxville, tn, and one mile from the Historic Cumberland gap ( Daniel Boone )
Anybody close to me?
Sorry for the long post but we are supposed to get to know each other here right?

OS9 and DP 3.11 is a great system for G4s (I'm on a dual-800).

I upgraded to OSX and 4.52 specifically to accomodate the EWQLSO library, which doesn't work faithfully under OS9, and subsequently I added Stylus RMX which doesn't work at all under OS9.

Without the need to use these VIs, I would have been happy to stay in OS9 and I would have been able to get a lot more accomplished by now, as my upgrade has been extremely rocky and frustrating.

My advice to G4 owners is to remain in OS9 and DP 3.11 until you upgrade to a G5. You'll get more work done...

Stylus RMX is revolutionary... though...

Yay!!! Someone else has the same experience as me!! The only thing I can do in DP4 is mix. Even that is a test of my patience because everything in X is ssoooooo slooooooowww. I pop back and forth quite a bit now, and the difference in the speed of the interface is STAGGERING. I feel like I'm working on a Quadra 840 every time I go into X. Even on a G5 the experience is not that different. And here here to the stability of DP in OS 9....add to that the extra CPU headroom, and I'm happy. No I can't have all the latest VI's and what not; but if I can't make great sounds/music with what I have, I just need to quit.

Have you all checked out this thread regarding optimizing OS X?
Optimizing OS X...
It sounds like this helped others... The article indicates that you can get equal to or better performance on OS X/DP4.5 as you're getting on OS 9/DP3.

I'm getting ready to move to OS X and DP4.5 myself and am also very concerned with what I'll be able to do once I get there (I'm also on a G4). It seems like support for OS 9 apps is waining, and it's time to move to OS X (for me). I also like a lot of the features OS X brings, but for audio DP3 is fine for what I do.

Well, I'll drop my $149 on DP4.5 and test it out in a couple weeks myself. If I need a G5 to go to DP4.5 I'm gonna feel so "Microsoft-ed". But, obsolescence is one of the realities of being a computer owner...

,,and there is certainly nothing wrong with any of that.
It's the musician that makes the music not the tools.
Having said that, I'm perfectly happy running a single G5 1.8
Big session with lots of tracks and VIs.
Since I also do a fair anount of video work, OS9 was a dead end
for me.
Final Cut pro and X is wayyy more reliable (and faster) then it ever was in 9.
I'm also far more stable in OSX and DP then I ever was in 9
as well.

yes. Things seem sooo slugish in dp 4.5.. makes me wonder what all the expense and trouble was about.

OS x is a better interface but if it works in slow motion... what is the point?

Some good points here.

OS9 was hell for me. I have a feeling that OSX/DP4 handles VIs and third party plugs much better than DP3 did. I used to crash frequently in DP3 and wait 10 minutes to get rebooted. My OSX/DP4.5 system seems to be bulletproof. Barely ever crashes and I do not find it slow in the least. This is on a Dual G4 1gig. I can't explain the difference in our experiences but this setup is the best it's ever been for my workflow.

Dan, I would guess the differences are in how we set up the computer. You know, custom extensions, optimizing, streamlining and all that. I like many others, do the best that they can, but are not sure (and afraid) to "custom delete" too many things for fear of the big crash orproblems with launching.
I wish I was close to someone who could sit down with me and take me through it all but alas, there isn't anyone around that I know of. i know many people here can post ways to do this, but here again, It is hard for some of us to understand all the steps even if it is written down or maybe it is just me?
I am sure, if a person who is well versed in the Mac OS, as many are on this board are, sat down and set their computer up correctly, they can run any version of DP in any version of OSX and have excellent results.
Because there is so much uneeded stuff in the OS system that is not needed to run DP, and does slow it down I think that is the reason for so many differences in everyone's experience with all these upgrades.
I would love to run a faster computer, have the latest OS and DP program. But at the expense of a ton of headaches, and inability to record music easily, which it is all about anyway.
As I said earlier..After a few years what is new now will be older and settled down, and software will be pretty much compatible so people like me will be able to upgrade much more effortlessly and painfully. And may I add that it will be possible to do this because of the knowledgeable users on this board who are good enough to work these upgrades and detect glitches and problems so that DP , Motu and other companies can respond , and produce updates that are more stable and efficient. Programming it is one thing. Using it is another. I am sure the programmers look for any feedback they can get.
I can't imagine what it is going to be like in 5 - 10 years

Take two,
Don

People complained for years that the mac needed pre-emptive
multitasking,multithreaded apps,
Now that it's here, people are starting t realize it's a little more
work to manage then OS9.
I think people tend to forget that OSX is still relatively new
to a certain exent.
There going to optimizing and tweaking code fo some time to come.
I've kept my OS streamlined and my install to a minimum and
Dp 4.52 is fast , responsive, (and mostly) rock solid.
Sure I've had the occasional quit but then I just restart the app.
In OS9 and Dp 3.11 I had plemty of crashes which would more often the not bring down the whole system.
I don't believe in bullet proof anything but I feel far more
confident that I could throw a heavy workload at DP 4.52 without
problems , then I ever could in 3.11 and OS9.

I was a reluctant convert to OSX, but in my experience it is a much more robust OS.

DP 4.52 with all its quirks, seems immune to crashes.

In OS9, 3.11 was much less stable for me.
The MIDI worked better, but the overall stability was shakey.
I would hold my breath, never knowing when the unexplained crash would come.

I won't go back.
All is well
