Re: How many people just audio record?
If you don't use any other DAWs DP's VI optimization may seem fine, but it's not. MOTU isn't competing in a vacuum. Logic can run 3 or 4 times more VIs and plugins w almost no GUI slow down and no sticky wiper.
Sorry but that's not the case.
I also run the latest version of Logic Express.
I can get one more instance of a VI such as Cameleon
in Logic over DP in the same kind of session.
Yes that is better but not three or 4 times better.
My computer is pretty much optimized for nothing but
Audio/Video.
I also don't get the sticky wiper and GUI slowdowns
you're referring to.
I do get the GUI slowdowns when I have hundreds of
small soundbites in a session AND beat and tempo analysis
enabled.

Back to the original topic...
I do a lot of sequencing, so in my case, 75% MIDI-25% Audio.

argh! Well, have you noticed the teraquads of bandwidth dedicated to *others* complaining that DP is mind-numbingly slow? As countless other threads have pointed out, the difference between the speeds of the two GUIs is not subtle. It's quite dramatic. I jumped ship and spent two years learning (to hate) Logic because of DP's sloth. ...and yes, what typically puts DP's cpu meter at 50% barely puts Logic's at 10%.Originally posted by sdfalk:

...Yes I have.
I'm also well aware that DP has problems as far as GUI speed
next to Logic, but that doesn't change the fact that I get lots
of work done in DP with very few problems.
By the way, I think Logics CPU meter is even less acurate then
DPs.
As was said previously..back to the original topic.

Re: How many people just audio record?
Agreed. Despite it's optimization issues I'm more productive in DP too, but that's why (getting back on-topic a bit) I think it's a shame that it's GUI speed prevents it from having a better rep as a VI friendly app and is largely thought of (from looking at this thread) as more of an audio app.Originally posted by sdfalk:

Re: How many people just audio record?
Well here goes the firestorm again. I use DP for composing projects to picture:50/50 MIDI and audio depending on the project. [ Mostly for TV; Film; commercials; etc.]
If the project is all audio such as an Audio post gig then I am all ProTools. If I was recording a live act I tend to start with 2inch for the drums and bass some guitar depending on the tunes and then dump to PT for the balance of the recording and mixing.
I have used Performer longer than any other piece of software - since version 2.0 in the late 80s. FOR ME it is currently too unstable with the HTDM hardware that we use for gigs that require alot of audio editing. Features are nice but it is too much of a crash-a-oholic.
I'm sure if you had a totally MOTU rig your expierence would be different.
JUST MY OPINION.

Re: How many people just audio record?
Hello:
I use MIDI for guide tracks and added extras. I use hardware MIDI so they end up as audio in the mix. I would have to say that 99% of my use to date has been for audio. I do use the MMC for controlling the tape deck sometimes but mostly I just sacrifice a track/output for LTC and let the deck chase lock.
