Just getting back into the digital recording thing & need some pre-purchase advice. I plan on running DP on a 2gig iMac core2 duo & tracking guitar mostly straight in. Although I'm doing this for non professional recordings, I need the sound to be stellar; any suggestions?
thanks
best guitar direct:software or stand alone multi fx?

I monitor through Guitar Rig 2 at night, and it sounds good. However, I record the direct guitar signal for Reamping through a real amp later on. This allows for the best of both worlds. Of course you can always "Reamp" through Guitar Rig 2 as well, tweaking your tone to perfection. And yes, a blend of real amps and Guitar Rig 2 will sound great, too.

As gearboy mentioned, there are some good plug-ins available, like Guitar Rig. Personally, I don't think much of amplitube.
The adavantage of running a hardware device like a Line6 POD, is being able to monitor your sound absolutely latency-free without having to set CPU-killing buffer settings on your DAW.
However, none of these devices/plug-ins are as good as the real thing (mic'ing a good amp), so it all depends on what your definition of 'stellar' is. But I'm sure they've been used on many hit records and joe-average couldn't hear the difference.

Hi,
Give ReValver MkII a try. The Mac version is in public beta now and should be released soon. I've been beta testing and using it for several months now and for my tastes it's the best sounding amp simulator I've tried - hardware or software. It can take a bit of experimenting to get a great sound because it has sooo many adjustable parameters but if you're the kind of person that enjoys spending time crafting your sounds in detail you'll love it.

True-I suppose given my real world limitations-I'll be recording mostly late nights at home in a mostly untreated room-my actual goals should be that it doesn't sound like ass. I think I can deal with tracking a decent sound & reamping later on.
