Better CPU performance - MOTU Ultralite or built in audio?

Post by mac603e »

Hi,

I cannot figure this out.

Which is easier on my CPU/System (allowing more tracks, VI, etc), using the built-in audio or using my Utralite?

In other words, when I am running DP 5, I want all the processing power I can have for virtual instruments.

Does using the Motu Ultralite (which I love) help take the workload off the CPU?

(FYI - in this case, using a powerbook g4 1.33mhz with (1.25 GB Ram) OX 10.4.9 / DP 5 (the latest drivers, etc))

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I've tried to figure it out and I'm stumped . . .

Any ideas

I think in general your Ultralite would task your CPU less. I think the built in audio requires more CPU processing but I could be wrong. Check out both.

In terms of getting as many VIs as you can. I would suggest that you Bounce to disk any live recordings (audio tracks with plugins etc) even if you are going to change them later. Import the bounced down version back into your project. Lower your buffers to 256 or 512 which ever your computer can tolerate. This will give you the lowest latency. Record you VI. This allows you to run your VI in near real-time while keeping up with your music. Print your VI and then work back on your other audio tracks.

You can increase the CPU capacity as well but disabling tracks that you don't need (or VIs that you don't need). This is not just muting then but pressing the ENA (I think) button the channel.

This discussion is probably best had within the DP forum - maybe
