Buying a used UAD-1-- question???

Post by James Steele »

Saw this in craigslist today:
UAD-1: version with LA-2A , 1176 and Pultec. $325.00
My question is can I buy a card like this used and will it work in my computer? Do I need to transfer registration for it to work? Is it authorized to the computer or does the mere presence of the card assure that the plugs will work. I want to make sure that if I buy it, I'll be able to legally install more plugs on my computer for it and that I will actually own the plug-ins that are being included.

If I'm not mistaken, first the person to whom it was originally registered must fill out a form:

http://www.uaudio.com/support/software/ ... nsfer.html

Once you get the license in your name (or a new license) it will work fine once it and the license is installed on your computer.

Take a look at the first topic under the FAQ
http://www.uaudio.com/support/software/UAD/index.html

I have a one year old UAD-1 Studio Pak that will work with a PCI or PCI-X G4/G5.

For various reasons I just don't see a future for UAD in my studio.

Let me know if you're interested.

The "base line" plugins will work in your computer as soon as you install the card. However, to build on that, the original owner will need to transfer the license to you. I've sold and transferred ownership of a UAD card recently. It's a simple undertaking.

You will LOVE the LA-2A. Having owned real 1176's and such in the past I was longing for a great sounding plug-comp for a long time...

Funny james, i saw the same thing on our local CL. Considering the LA-2A and 1176 are worth 300 alone, it's a pretty good price. check to make sure that the "Pultec" included is the "Pultec Pro." The vanilla Pultec is pretty great, but it comes free with any UAD-1 card, if it is the Pro version this is an even better value. Shouldn't be too hard to move authorizations. UA is very good about this, esp. since a lot of folks are selling their UAD-1 cards in favor of UAD-1e (PCI express cards)

I did it too!

I did the same thing last year. I bought a new Studio pak, with Dreamverb LA2A, 1176, etc. Then I bought a used card on EBay. The guy authorized a transfer of ownership to me, and UAudio sent auth. files to me. All of the Plugins I own, work on the "used" card. The one thing to look for is the demos on the used card. I never tried some plugs and when I put the "used" card in, my demos expired. I emailed UAudio and they sent me new demo auths. They are a great company to work with.

I bought a second hand UAD-1 card with 5 plug-in licences. The transfer / registration process was quite painless.

I highly recommend them.

Thanks for all the info. Well, if the guy still has it tomorrow maybe I'll go for it. The Pultec is not the Pultec Pro and I go a little nervous about it as I was wondering if I will go Intel in a year or two and whether I should just put it off and stay native. Dunno. So this deal is basically the Project Pack plus two plugs that would cost $300 separately for $325. Just not sure.

Well the nice thing is if you do go to intel mac, you can always sell the UAD-1 PCI-x card w/out the authorizations, and crossgrade to a UAD-1e, which depending on the one you buy comes with very attractive plugin vouchers, crossgrade offers (till June or July i think) etc. etc. And of course, you get to keep the LA2A and the 1176.

Unless it is the mackie card...is this correct? Mackie used to distribute the UAD-1, and it came with the LA2A and the 1176. Now, if someone resells a Mackie UAD-1, I'm not sure if they get to keep the authorizations for those 2 plugs... I think they do but again not sure. New UAD-1's don't come with those two plugs free.

I might have caused more questions than i've answered....

Hmmm... well, that's a good question to ask. I think the seller is a PC user and I will ask him if he bought it back when Mackie was selling it.

The transfer process is either all or none on the plug-ins. I'm about to sell an old UAD-1 card since I went to Intel (holding it for someone at the moment) so I am keeping my plugs.

I went out actually yesterday and bought a 2nd UAD-1e card before I sell the UAD-1. Why?

Crossgrade gives me an xtra $100 till June while I still own UAD-1 in my account.

April promotion gave me $50 to upgrade to and Express UAD-1e

New card gives you $100.

Can't beat that, now just trying to figure out what I want :)

I was able to authorize these plugins when buying a used Mackie card.

That price is kinda high for the card isn't it? I dunno, maybe not. I'm about to practically give away my Mackie card to someone else since I can't use it in my Quad, and I don't really feel like adding any more dsp in the computer. But I think a used mackie is a pretty good buy with all the included plugs.

I think you should just get the rest of the Oxford plugs. 8)
