424 PCI or PCIe

Post by billmacd »

Haven't heard anything regarding my previous post yet, so I am paning on buying one of 3 424 cards currently on eBay. They are all listed as 424 PCI. Yet arounf here i see PCIe tossed around, especially in the MAC forum. I don't have a OCIe slot. MOTU doesn't show if they make both on their site. Please fill me in. Thanks

I have had a PCI424 (original) and a revised PCI424 (which I believe is commonly called the PCI-X). There is also a PCI-E.

If you don't have PCI-E slots in your computer, you need to be sure you get a PCI or PCI-x. Preferably a PCI-X which works with newer hardware and also on older PCI voltages. Have the seller send you a picture of the PCI Card's edge connector. There should be a group of gold stripes, a missing gap (like it was sawed out of the card) and another group of stripes, another gap and more stripoes. That card works with newer motherboards. The original is a hit and miss affair when using new mobos. Cost me a 75 USD upgrade fee.

Larry,

Is 75 what it costs to get from the god-forsaken "original" 424 to the "x"? (I think last I checked, it had a "contact sales" rather than a price quote) I've had plans to upgrade my host on the back burner for a while, but figure I'll be SOL cardwise if I don't switch.

Thanks!

George
