Mach Five Ver 2 for sale! (...according to Sweetwater)

Post by MIDI Life Crisis »

Got my Sweetwater catalogue today and they are selling (or at least misleading customers into thinking they are buying) Mach Five Version 2 - discussing stand-alone mode, etc. What they DON'T tell you is that MachFive Ver 2 is vaporware, or that you are buying a version that has not been updated (or commented on by MOTU) since 10/17/2005.

I've bought plenty of stuff from Sweetwater and have always been happy with the service and quality, but this is a bit over the top. Maybe they know something we don't? Or maybe they were told something at NAMM that MOTU didn't want to announce to the public or press?

If I were less knowledgeable about all this stuff and ordered M5 expecting stand-alone and unlimited instances or was on an Intel Mac and M5 didn••™t run at all, and received ver 1.2.3 I'd be mighty PO'd.

I've seen this happen before and honestly, and I'm only guessing here, it might mean that v 2 isn't all that far off for real this time. Sweetwater wouldn't risk their rep if it was still months away.

Actually, I think their last catalogue (or perhaps another vendor) posted a Ver 2 announcement like this about a year ago. Sales must be slipping, but if it keeps M5 alive, well maybe it's worth it. But it can't be good for business if they cannot deliver the goods.

It so happened that SWater emailed me today (probably as a follow up tot he catalogue). So I emailed back asking about M5 v2 and here is the reponse. No names to protect the innocent (no, it was NOT Brad Lyons - besides, he is too busy being a husband - or is that husband to be???)

"As of last week MOTU assured us that Version 2 is at the top of their list in terms of software updates. I'm a Mach Five user myself, so believe me, I'm staying on top of this one. I think it's a matter of MOTU announcing the new version way too far in advance and perhaps not realizing the effort it was going to take to rewrite all of their software to be Universal Binary. (all of it except Mach Five, I know...)

I would be happy to keep you updated as I get more information regarding the release of Version 2."

Of course I asled him to! You'll get it as I get it. (Nooo!!! Not there!!!!!)

M L C,
Thank you for sharing that exchange. It does offer a glimmer of hope.

At a glance the SW info on M5 looks the same as last years catalog.

I often make statements, or committments, then realize what a SL of work and time that's involved.

(Fingers crossed.)
