I am sorry to say, I have defected to Native Instruments as far as sampling is concerned. I have gone a year without MachFive and can wait no longer.
I through myself on the mercy of the court.
Thus far, I have been very pleased with Kontakt.

Have to say I've been using Kontakt ever since I found it was the only software sampler that has a "latch" function (important to me for live use). I still have M5 and, due to the sample library I've built up, it has been getting use. However, I'm currently finding it unusable having upgraded to the latest version of OSX (see separate post).
My feelings are that MOTU have some considerable opposition from the NI camp which they really need to address in the long awaited V2.
Anyone who has used NI products will know that updates tend to be pretty regular and reasonably quick with regard to accommodating system/hardware upgrades. I notice that MOTU updates for M5 haven't exactly been coming thick & fast (but maybe that's because it's such a rock solid app.......) so I'm beginning to wonder if they're losing interest in this particular product.

I wouldn't get overly worried about Kontakt 2's head start.
I own Kontakt 2 and have mixed feelings about it, as I still feel mach Fives has a better and more intuitive interface.
But as I received Kontakt 2 as part of the Komplete package, I see no reason to complain. Were I to have bought it separately, I'm not sure I could say the price is justified (whereas I can unequivocably say this about Battery 3, due to its well laid-out workflow and rich feature set).
There has been a bit of a backlash against NI recently, as they are seen as using somewhat coercive tactics and some vendors/partners have decided to go their own way (such as east/west -- though please don't take this as a "political" statement, as I am not trying to engage in defamation).
Part of this probably has to do with difficult decisions NI had to make in order to get the Kore Sound format to work with all of their apps.
But for whatever reason, a couple of their plug-ins (notably FM8) have taken a bit of a step back from the previous versions as well -- at least in terms of authenticity and backward-compatibility for large patch libraries.
As many of the larger players are going to their own VI's now (partly due to not wanting NI to dictate the terms to them, but also for better copy protection and in some cases a more user-friendly and rich GUI), gthe perceived threat of Kontakt 2 to Mach Five's survival is overblown IMO.
