Sample Truncation:Just how close do I have to cut it???

Post by wvandyck »

Below are screen grabs of trumpet sounds (from my first playback sampler, 1989) triggered by MIDI notes in DP. The notes would play immediately when triggered by MIDI as they also do when I click on the Mach 5 keyboard. I don't have any issues with how they respond when triggered.

However, there does some to be some initial breath noise ( or ghosts in the machine???) before the beef (not a musical term is it?) appears. (I usually truncate percussive sounds right at the point of...beef.)

Should I leave well enough alone and go have lunch???
Or should I roll up my sleeves and start truncating???

purely comes down to personal preference.

for myself. I'd get rid of the breath noises, as it is unrealistic to take a breath every note (unless you're heavy smoker like myself :D ), however, I'd capture at least of the breath noises and put them on a couple of the high out-of-instrument-range keys to use spareingly for effect.

My ears hear a more or less instantaneous reponse so may what the eyes see is not so relevant.
