Re: Apple to start using INTEL chip......
FWIW, I took the dream on a little personal too!
Anyway, what excites me is not the fact that there may be MAC clones, either from other vendors or hacked, but for the first time, there is hope that the x86 instruction set will allow users that have invested in the "PC" with it's x86/*.exe executables (plug ins, vst instruments) the possibility to load these onto a MAC.
I also have anothere friend that has a DUAL G5 and to be honest it's not that fast, still, I'm not that excited as the AMD chips trumph the fastest Intel chips and many of the MAC users that switched to AMD was due to AMD being more powerful, moreover, if it wasn't for AMD, Intel would still be getting an extra $500 for a mere 50hz upgrade in speed. However, AMD came out with the Athlon, and this changed the whole game plan, never mind the price structure that INTEL had a stangle hold on.
This should equate APPLE the possibility of using AMD chips too, even if unauthorized, I can bet there are already orders of the machines on the way to testing labs as we speak/type, where the tech sites will try it with AMD chips.
Here is a snippet of a recent test result showing the two (AMD vs Intel) in Dual cores..
"................Here's the bottom line. If we had to recommend a single core processor, the choice would depend greatly on the type of applications in use. But in the dual core arena, though, there is not much that speaks for Intel: go with the Athlon 64 X2............."
http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20050509/cual_core_athlon-20.html
and yet another article/quote w/link
"...............While clones are a major threat for Apple, it does not necessarily mean that the company does not want to make a yet another clone-approach attempt. HP currently sells iPod players by Apple under its own brand-name and it does not seem that they are unsuccessful with this type of business. Provided that Apple••™s hardware will be aligned with what the industry uses, providing the same level of availability and flexibility, third-party computer makers or resellers may enter Mac business, especially in case Macs will get cheaper and faster with Intel inside...................."
