I don't think any of this will happen, but if it does, couldn't Apple simply write an emulation program that ran OS X PPC programs on the Intel chipset?

Yes. I posted that already. I read it in one of the publications.I don't think any of this will happen, but if it does, couldn't Apple simply write an emulation program that ran OS X PPC programs on the Intel chipset?
From Mac Rumors:
"Questions such as emulation layers, current PowerPC Mac sales, developer migration, end user confusion and more. As well, Steve Jobs was recently asked about the possibility of switching to Intel and reportedly "Jobs basically said no."

Re: Apple to start using INTEL chip......
Following the the trail of rumours like a mad bloodhound following up to the WWDC. People, Im going to say Steve jobs will annouce the switch to Intel tomorrow is most definitely happening. Or something very similiar to it. An heres how it will be done. Go to www.transitive.com an start reading. it seems theres a legal confidentially contract from the company from speaking out related to its emulation software. At least six major hardware developers have signed on to there software. Hmm, I wonder who those companies are? Tomorrow will be one of the most interesting days for Apples future in this announce as well its users whatever happens.
Your answers to life handed to you on a spoon.

Don't understand why folks are freaking out -- help me out.
OS X is unix by way of Darwin -- Unix with Darwin currently runs without major problems on Intel hardware.
If the rumor is true, I don't really see a big problem here.
Also, Altivec..not unlike ARM...is technically an independent beast..it can be programmed to work with Intel...assuming Altivec is still SOTA (state-of-the-art).
Code portability is work but not hazardous..
Actually...there are rumours that OS X already runs on Intel hardware -- probably more advanced than many would imagine.
Unix is still the most portable OS.....

Re: Apple to start using INTEL chip......
This Intel move makes me feel sick. Just as OSX/DP finally work like a dream, Apple will blow things up.
Maybe this move is good for a future of Apple, but I just don't want another OS9>OSX round again.
Internet rumors are now about emulators (http://blog.wired.com/cultofmac), but for an audio work.. uh, there will be a lot of problems.
I still hope this is only a rumor and nothing else.

OS X started life as NeXTStep, which ran on both intel and motorola processors (and others too).Originally posted by mastermix:

When Apple bought NeXT, one of the selling points was that the development environment created executables that RAN NATIVELY on intel as well as motorola processors. From the very same code base. That stuff is still there somewhere, I have no doubt.
OS X was gonna be developed for intel too. I had a developer release that ran on my Pentium box.
Then at the next developer conference, Apple announced they were dropping development of OS X intel. Excuse was too many drivers to deal with and compatibility issues.
I have no doubt that they kept working on it behind the scenes. Why not? I am guessing that iAPPs probably are there too, maybe more.
I DO NOT GET WHY UNICORNATION THINKS THE SKY IS FALLING.
If macs are moving to intel processors, it is going to take more than a day. The transition will be gradual. My guess would be phase out of G4s for an intel chip in mac mini and powerbooks, which ship w iApps, etc, G5s continue on their merry way for a while, and then who knows what will happen. . .I'll be due for a new computer anyway, so whatever. . .
If steve is building a new class consumer device based on intel processors (set-top, vid iPod, whatever), that is good news for us -- more profits for apple = more mac development, and another way to distrib our wares

Re: Apple to start using INTEL chip......
If you think your MOTU hardware is going to just plug into an Intel box with OSX running on it, and work just like it does now, then I've got some Florida real estate you might be interested in buying for a huge payout in just six weeks!I DO NOT GET WHY UNICORNATION THINKS THE SKY IS FALLING.
If you think Waves plugins will just transfer over--just load the disc--into OSX on Intel, then I've got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you! Waves will take advantage of this to charge us about $1000 for the Platinum Bundle upgrade.
How long do you think it will be until MOTU comes out with a working copy with no bugs? In fact, do you think that MOTU can financially stay afloat through another major rewrite?
How many of us users will be able to make the change? Only 5 years after turning our bank accounts inside out for OSX, we'll have to do it again for Intel.
Yes, this sucks, big time. If you work for a major studio with deep pockets for equipment upgrades, then enjoy yourself. But I'll tell you what most businessmen will say: "Switch to Intel? Hell, we've already got Pro-Tools on Intel. Just use THAT. Forget this Mac crap."
You think not? Then I can hook you up with the son of the president of Nigeria, who wants to transfer money to your account. Just send me a check first to sort of "prime the pump." Ok?

Re: Apple to start using INTEL chip......
And furthermore...
who is going to buy MOTU products between now and the change-over? And if nobody buys their products for the next 2-3 years, how are they going to stay afloat to write for the Intel chip?
OSX was a lose-win situation. Everybody had to sacrifice--users, developers, Apple--to get to the "promised land." Now that we're here, we haven't even gotten all the bugs worked out yet. There's a lot more to go just to get Digital Performer running perfectly on all Macs. I'm still using an 896 Firewire interface, which even on the current Macs has no capability for CueMix. Had to sacrifice some functionality there. How's it going to run on Intel? Chances are, it won't run at all. Just because it runs on PCs doesn't mean they'll be able to make a driver that plugs it directly into whatever chip Intel provides for Apple.
Of course, if we're lucky it won't be as bad as switching from OS9 to OSX. But there is absolutely no guarantee that ANY of our current stuff will work with the new Mac-Tel. If that is the case, it will be "lose-lose" for everyone. Get ready to take out some loans, brothers, and better start praying for MOTU in the meantime.
