almost bankrupted MOTU?? Where'd you get that info?
A little bit of exaggeration, friend. Cut me some slack. I'm explaining something and that's a bit of trivia in the overall picture. Do the numbers. You know that rewriting DP wasn't pleasant for MOTU's bottom line.

It's nothing to worry about anyway. Won't stop me from making music, no matter what happens.
Won't stop me, either. Just maybe with Macs. At this point I'm just hoping the story goes away. Another rumor. The more I think about it, the more I think that indeed it will turn out to be just a rumor.

Last time these rumors surfaced was right before the G5 was announced. I have also read about new dual core G5 chips being announced too. You will know monday but if it is any assurance, Steve knows what he is doing. Don't be suprised if you later find out this was 'leaked' on purpose or that it is just way to overblown.

Hey, I bought a 24 and 16 track Ampex 1200 last year and had the heads relapped. What do I care? Here's my take on it.
If Apple uses anything Intel they will have Intel build in the emulator on top of the chip.
They will likely use it for the cheap and not the upper end •••• to break the current price points.
Anyway I doubt they could ever get emulator's to ever work up to core speeds so as far as G6 desktops and the servers, that's a bad rummer anyway. The G5 will likely kick along for a few more years and speeds will increase slowly.
Their not going to cut their own throat you know.
If Apple was planning such a revolutionary change they would design it as a new product ground up and run it along side of PPC technology to compete with Dell. They would likely port OSX over to PC at that point.
If they did this it would be a win win situation for all of us.
Sooshi, "don't worry, be happy now".
if it's true its a gamble for apple. if it's not true most of us are happy.
I have been using macs since before mac plus, which was the first one I actually purchased. On average I have used each computer for 5 years. I have a new g5x2. i will use it for 5 years. by then, if they are using intel and if the gamble paid off, i will get a new computer and have to buy upgrades to apps whether I like it or not. firewire hardware etc will stil work, surely.
If the gamble fails I will use my g5 until I can nolonger get parts to fix it.
we are all pretty much in the same boat. The computers we have now do pretty much eveything we want. Actually I could use this computer till I die.
I used a pentax camera for 25 years. lets get real. we have tools, they work.
on a personal level for most of us this is not so serious. the only thing disturbing is the huge gamble apple wouold take if this is true.

It'll be a rumor... Sales of hardware will PLUMMET if everyone thinks the platform is changing in a year..SJ isn't that dumb...
but if it IS true..the costs of new MACs will come down...
If they port to ANY other manufacturer processor, rest assured that OSX will run just fine - and TRANSPARENTLY on it.
The only stuff that would have to be ported over would be assembly language low level stuff - everything else should be fine.
I think they're just frustrated with the brick wall they've hit with not being able to have a powerbook G5 - or significantly increase the desktop speeds. They need to do something forward looking.
Of course, maybe Steve is just holding a bunch if Intel stock and wanted to bump it before selling
Of all the things that worry me, this one does the least...
IBM recently cut a deal with a Japanese printer company for their chips. I think they know what they need to do to get it happening We'll see what in for the PPC soon.

I think what has people worried is this quote from the Cnet article that started this firestorm (the story on CNet BTW has been modified. Yesterday the quote was much worse where it essentially said all current OSX apps would have to be rewritten to even work):
From Cnet Article: Changing the chips would require programmers to rewrite their software to take full advantage of the new processor.
The biggest concern is that we would all be left with orphan systems and that the investments we've all made in hardware and software could be immediately made obsolete. But we shall find out what the truth is in about 24 hours from now. After that, we can either laugh at Cnet for their inaccuracies, or we can all start talking about how we convert DP projects over to Cakewalk

I would be interested to find out if it would be possible for PPC emulation on a dual 3.6+ Pentium/AMD to be faster than an actual dual 2.7 G5 (unlikely, but who knows...) -- if this is the case (altivec aside) -- I'm all for it...

It's quite possible that all the talk of Intel chips is true, but not in the way Cnet is reporting it. There are rumors of an Apple wireless tablet/video streaming device using Intel Wimax and a reduced version of OSX.
Perhaps Apple is ready to do for video what it did for music downloads, and the press leak about Intel is a bit of misdirection on Apple's part made to ensure that all eyes and ears are tuned into Steve Jobs Keynote tomorrow.
We find out for sure tomorrow.

Just wanted to chime in on this stuff ... If 9and that's a big IF) this goes down, Apple will not throw away it's software base it's been fighting for years to get built up. I don't see code running 100% transparently, but it woldn't be far off, especially for cocoa apps .. the only big difference I can see is that some minor adjustments might be needed to account for endianess differences . . . in other words probably no more than minor updates would be required for most applications to run.. that and a recompile on the new toolchain. For that matter with a cross compiler type toolchain they wouldn't even need the hardware to compile it... just rebuild the project with the appropriate tweaks .
That said I really can't see the switch happening like this... at least not more than maybe introducing some tablet or something that might be intel based (I mean the iPod is ARM based and no one cares about that hehe), but even (especially) in that realm PPC prevails as a better choice as well.
