New to MOTU: Quick Ultralite main out/headphone A/B question

Post by N8-R »

Hi all!

Just got my Ultralite today and it is GREAT! Loving it so far. I just have one quick question.

Right now I am working 100% "inside the box" (not recording any instruments. Just using UL as my audio interface for Logic and Live). Is there any way to quickly A/B between my monitors (main out) and my headphones? Maybe some quick encoder press to mute the main outs? Any way at all? I just find it a bit tedious having to turn down the main volume each time in order to check my mix on the 'phones.

Is there maybe a way to do this with CueMix? From what I've read, i'd think not, since it would seem that the cuemix console only controls the inputs and not the outputs from my sequencers. Is that right?

Sorry if my questions are a little silly. Read through the manual and tried searching around but couldnt find any answers that helped. Thanks in advance

I' m using the speakers A/B switchon my power amplifier for temporarely muting. Or chose the output destination menu in your logic output channel strip. Depends on your exactly setup what is most practical.

thanks a lot. :)

I was really hoping there would be a way to do it directly from the ultralite without having to turn down the main volume encoder each time. I got used to that convenient little feature from when I was using the Mackie Onyx Satellite.

Any other suggestions?

I don't have an ultralite but you should be able to have a mix assigned to your monitors and another one to your main out in cuemix. make sure that phones follow active is off in cuemix. then the phones and and the main should be independent.

thanks. I have tried doing this through cuemix but i just cant get it to work.

Tell me if I'm doing anything wrong. On MOTU Audio Setup, I have Main Output 1-2 as the Default Stereo Output. I have set the Phones output to Phones 1-2.

I have my monitors connected to the Main Out. In CueMix, on Bus 1 I have the output set to the Main Out 1-2. On bus 2 I have the output set to Phones 1-2. I have turned off "Follow Active Mix".

However, when I switch to Bus 2, absolutely nothing happens. Audio is still coming out of the monitors, and I cant get any audio through the phones. I try to mute Bus 1 but audio is still coming out of the monitors. This is especially weird. Its as if though CueMix does absolutely nothing. No matter what I do, I get no audio through the phones.

i'm probably missing some sort of setting but I just cant figure out what it is :(

any further help?

CueMix is just for patching through live inputs -- it won't do anything to the audio playing back from Logic, Live, or any other host.

The UltraLite has discrete outputs for Main Outs 1-2 and Phones 1-2 (though you could make the phones mirror the Main Outs). The numbering scheme for the UltraLite's outputs on a Mac is (see this tech note):

1-2 : Main Outs
3-10 : Analog 1-8
11-12 : S/PDIF 1-2
13-14 : Phones 1-2

So in your software (Live, whatever), change your master output from 1-2 to 13-14.

Thank you for the replies. I now have a more or less basic understanding of CueMix's capabilities and limitations. I have figured out a way to A/B witihn my sequencer by creating separate busses for the control room and my headphones.

Appreciate the help! :)

I just purchased the Ultralite and everything seems to be working well, but I think I have another question regarding inputs and outputs. I am confused by some of the numbering of the inputs and outputs on the back of the Ultralite. The manual is very clear on the Main Outs 1-2, but the rest of the numbering is confussing with the exception of input 7-8. I have one of my keyboards assigned to those inputs.

Maybe I'm stupid, but where does the manual say 11-12: is S/PDIF 1-2? Where's 13-14: Phones 1-2 in the manual? Hopefully it's just a brain fart.

1-2 : Main Outs
3-10 : Analog 1-8
11-12 : S/PDIF 1-2
13-14 : Phones 1-2

I would appreciate some enlightenment.

Thanks!
