Anyone here use an intel Imac with DP?

Post by GDKF »

My geririgged pwerbook (broken monitor and keyboard) just had its hard drive die.

So i am going to get a new mac. The tower ones are way too expensive.

So i am probably going to get an iMac.

I was wondering if anyone round here was using one successfully with DP. esp. DP 4.61, which I am currently using. Of course I'll switch to 5 eventually.

So, lets hear it! :D

you'll need dp 5

intel macs don't work with DP 4. you need version 5 for universal binary compatibility.

i'm using the 24" imac with DP 5.11 and it's a solid setup. you won't be disappointed.

I have used DP 5.11 on a 2gigish core duo macbook pro, which is more or less an iMac only silvery and portable and more pricey. It flies. I mean really flies. as ltemma74 you will not be disappointed. It will be a HELL of an upgrade from your G4.

Note if you have any third party plugs you will need to update them to intel ready versions (called in the lingo "Universal Binary" meaning that it runs on both intel macs and powerpc macs)

I'm running DP 5.11 on my 24" Intel iMac and it absolutely rocks. I've done a few projects with about 20 tracks of MIDI driving the Ethno instrument as well as racks of Reason 3.0 samplers, and I'm barely impacting the CPU. I've also done a few projects adding in some live guitar audio tracks, and I'm seeing simularly excellent performance!

it kicked sand in my G5's face!

I run DP5.11 on a MacBook 1.83.
Just have slipped 2Go ram and a 7200rpm hard disk inside.

Very nice system for my workflow.
Much more power under my fingers than my old Titanium.

Good to hear that the 24inch iMacs are the way to go. Just wondering if there are some special things to consider when getting an external hard drive for this setup? I was considering a mybook pro. http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=242 Any thoughts??

I use DP on both my Macbook and iMac 17" and it works fine. It took a little longer to configure my iMac strangely even though it is the core 2 duo as opposed to my Macbook 13" which is only the core duo.

I dearly wish I could have sprung for the 24" bad boy iMac but you know, I'm just thankful to have the two Macs that I have and not stuck with my crappy Dell PCs (although I am slaving one at the moment to run Gigastudio and HALion Symphonic Orchestra (until Steinberg gets off their butts and releases a Universal update like every other developer has done up to this point!).

It's funny how some of the work methods in DP took me a while to get used to coming from Logic Express but I do find some similarities between DP and an older program I used in the '90s called Mastertracks Pro.

Anyhow, they iMacs and DP5 work nicely together.

I bought a 20" standard model core2duo iMac from an apple store and am completely blown away by the performance of this machine. Before this I was using a 12" 1.33 powerbook and the iMac with DP has put the powerbook to shame. Supposedly a 2.13 core2duo machine will outperform a dual 2.5 G5 .. and the 2.33 will trounce a dual 2.7 G5 .. Unless you are doing ridiculously massive projects warranting the power of a MacPro - such as working exclusively at 192khz with insane track counts, the iMac should be able to handle anything you throw at it. I would recommend getting at least 2 gigs of ram.

In case anyone was up nights wondering how this all worked out, I await delivery of a 17 incher.

Um, iMac, of course.

I'm currently using the 17" IMac with the 2ghz Core 2 Duo processor. I upgraded my RAM to 2GB and I haven't had any problems running DP 5.11. It ran fine with the 1GB of RAM that it came stock with. Of course, I'm not doing any MIDI. I record only audio tracks with it.

I'm using a new Mac Pro 2.66 dual-core duo Xeon Intel CPUs, and it's a dream come true. I was concerned about upgrading all my software, but I've found that pretty much everything I've downloaded in the past year or so has been Universal Binary, so it all runs natively. Just a few things are still PowerPC only, and they seem to run fine in Rosetta. I'm very pleased with this computer. The transition has not been difficult at all.

Mastertracks Pro. My very first computer sequencer. 8) Fond memories with that one. Then I fell for cubase vst. 7 years later found my way to DP. :D 8) :D

I've heard very positive benchmarks from Mike Beck about the iMac. This thread is just increasing the drool...

There are significant advantages to a desktop model. Also a significant price tag.
