Transposing on input
well.. I guess this is a dumb question... I know how to transpose MIDI after it's been recorded... but how I can I get it to transpose as I'm recording? Is there a way to do this within digital performer?
Hi
It depends on what you want.
Sometimes it is possible. It depends on the capability of transposing in the instrument you play.
In some synthesizers or VIs it is possible to transpose the sound so and so many semitones up or down as desired.
Example:
If you play in C major and you transpose your instrument two semitones ( half-steps ) down it will naturally sound like you played in Bb major.

yeah... I figured out the plugin deal last night... it works out just fine... it's just annoying when it comes to notation... however... that's an easy fix in the long run... so for the sake of having a very quick setup with my samples I guess I could just go back later and take care things...
I guess I was kinda thinking about how you can transpose so easily with logic right there in the menu of each track... is there nothing like that for digital performer?
Thanks

Well, you could always just transpose it. That used to be the essence of good musicianship; one could transpose into any key, on sight, or by ear. I guess with tools to do it for them, people can't really be faulted for not learning that, but... I'm just saying... it's not always necessary to have a button for everything. What's next? A button for vibrato? (oh, yeah, already have that one) A button for correcting pitch? (oh... yeah... got that one, too) Wrong notes? Short of reading minds, I doubt that one's going to happen.
Play it in with the plugin applied to the track. Render the plugin. One extra step. Sorry it's such a hassle, but honestly that's the first time I've ever heard anyone voice that complaint in 23 years of using MOTU products.

I was curious about this because I was considering changing my 88 key controller out for my nord electro. The electro has an octave shift key but it doesn't shift the MIDI out just the internal sound. Since some of my mach 5 stuff is mapped so low I thought it would be cool if there was a way to set up a transpose map in feature in DP (I think this is similar to what this fellow is asking for right?) so that even the the nord is sending out c3 for example DP sees it as a c1

Transpose MIDI plugin is the way to go!!! In the mixer you insert the plugin directly on your MIDI trackKarlSutton wrote:I was curious about this because I was considering changing my 88 key controller out for my nord electro. well... I'm sorry I upset you about wanting to be able to see the transposed audio in the notation... I guess I just didn't think that was too much to ask... I'm was just wondering for when I'm working on parts like bass strings and bassoon, and I just want them to play octaves together... but with one simple key for quick composing... anyway..
thanks for the feedback... I'll use the plugin and do what I gotta do... I guess I thought the point of MIDI was that it's so flexable... I know how to transpose, I was just looking for an on the fly simple solution.

I don't think anyone was upset. As for myself, I just thought it was an odd request. The plugin is the method used within DP. DP is not big on scoring, as that used to be handled by another MOTU product. (MOTU wrote the first score-writing software for the Mac, then another, but didn't stay with it) Score writing software generally has menu choices for the various orchestral instruments, so that they display at their transposed pitch. That would be a bit much for DP's very compromised QuickScribe.
But the REAL method for what you're asking is actually much simpler than any DAW can offer. Pretty much every MIDI keyboard offers this feature. Just transpose the output of the keyboard.

rdonnelly, it's not (too much to ask) and you can (see transposed MIDI in the notation *as* you record).
open the track you're going to record in to in QuickScribe (notation), go to the Quickscribe menu Options>Track Options. You'll see a "transpose" section that will allow you to set up the proper transposition for the instrument you're recording. Then, when you roll record, you'll see the notation *transposed* as you play it in.
good luck
if you run in to problems, it's in the (DP5) manual on page 364
