Lay it back - it'll sound funkier

I am afraid if I lay it back the groove might sag or feel "lazy".

However, you are right in your analysis on TOP's groove. Garibaldi does play on the top partial of the beat (I think that's what you mean when you say "borderline rushing") and the bass is more on the center or lower partial.

For my tune I was looking for a Steely Dan (Steve Gadd or Ricky Lawson) type of drum groove - where the bass drum is dead center but the snare is dropped back just a little to give the groove a relaxed feel. In this case I think I like where the bass line sits and interacts with the drums.

It's interesting how we can both hear the same song but have different opinions on where music elements should sit :)
