828mkII and bypassing integrated sound?

Post by datguy »

Hello everyone, I am trying to bypass the integrated soundMax card on my WinXP machine, so that Windows Media Player, Real, etc. will play out of the MOTU 828mkII instead of the soundMax card. Does anyone know how to make this happen? I have searched around and tried a variety of different things, including disabling the soundMax card, not mapping audio through it, etc. XP will also not let me switch it in the Sounds and Audio Devices menu under the Audio tab. It only show the SoundMax Digital Audio device. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance :)

Tony, if you want it off completely, and won't need it, you probably should find the actual BIOS option for the sound circuit, and turn that off. Sometimes they'll use a motherboard jumper too, but you'd have to check the board's manual. When you say "disabled" do you mean you just "checked" that box in the device manager? (may have the same affect anyway)

I've got the 424, but I'm guessing the 828's can also install a regular WDM driver along with ASIO (may even be the default). With that in there, you should get it in all those regular multimedia apps, but you may have a better shot if they have no alternative.

I'm guessing you've got the 828's prefs in the "sound & multimedia" control panel "devices" section set to allow stuff to use it? There's also separate prefs in the options section of some of those regular apps, where you can select a device (WinAmp for instance).

I'd get the SoundMax completely killed, reinstall the 828 stuff (check the WDM if possible), then maybe even reinstall a current DirectX just for the hell of it.

FWIW- Some people prefer not to give anything but their ASIO app access to the real card. There's a possibility that something may try to talk to it at some crap sample rate while you're using it (doubtful), but it probably doesn't matter these days. The "do not map" still might be wise on the 828, and you can still use it in those other apps.

Hope that helps,

George
