another source of mine, not at NAMM this time, told me that last spring USB almost went out of business and this has had major consequences for MOTU. something about the licensing fees of the engine and them being stuck with a lot of inventory of small software titles that nobody was buying since the sample market changed or something like that.

it kind of made sense.

just a question. i just bought true strike 2 and it says that the M5 samples contain keyswitching. does M5I actually support keyswitching? have i been converting things wrong or does KS not translate in the conversion????

I don't know what the cause is; I'm not sure I'm going to care. I'll keep my M5 license around in case they finally sort everything out...

But the new feature announcements and immediate availability of Independence have won me out. Box should arrive over the next couple of days. If M5 comes out and it's free, I'll consider moving back to it; if the upgrade isn't free, I'll have to think about it. Regardless, my patience has ended, and I wish I'd moved a few months ago when I really decided I didn't want to wait around any longer. NAMM was their last shot.

M5 v 1 does not support KS

......V2 will support it.... :D

hmm interesting - I wonder if many 3rd P libraries have been made - with KS - but which have not been released yet because of the V2 delay...

Hmmm...but Motu had no problems with Ethno and SI. Same UVI engine.

The amazing thing is that MAchFive DOES support key switching from the very begining. Have you had a look at the Expert Mode in the manual?
I keep on reading this on unicornation but it actually seems like nobody read the documentation or even tried the expert mode.

All i can say after moving over to a new Intel Mac....opening everything up to find that Mach5 isn't there.

It's been a FRICKING year.........
and now I'm starting to loose faith.

They have not update the software for over a year..
and if this is what we can look forward to in the future.
Then time to jump to a company that is on the Intel front.

We all need a solution NOW! Not "sometime in the future".
Is that what I'm suppose to tell my clients? "uh, yeah, I can
get the job done for you sometime in the near future....it will
be done when it's done....until then your gonna have to wait"

We are MOTU's clients and I don't know if I can wait around anymore!

For as strange as it sounds, your obligation to your clients is much stronger and higher than MOTU's obligation to you to get MachFive v2 released quickly.

Even if it were all the rage at NAMM, you'd still not see it on store shevles for at least a month or so.

I would feel no guilt in doing whatever it takes to keep income flowing in and clients coming back for more. Your clients don't really care if you use MachFive or not (do they?)-- they just want their stuff to sound good and to be delivered in a timely fashion.

Inasmuch as your clients rely on you to deliver, we are relying on MOTU to deliver until such time we can wait no longer. You wouldn't want to lose clients for the same reasons some are moving away from MachFive.

Feeling no guilt is one thing. Feeling no frustration is another matter entirely.

what i'm sayinbg is that the programs such as SAM that have keyswitching in say EXS doesn't convert in M5.

i have all of the SAM stuff and none of the keyswitching translated over. the file structure changed from what i see in EXS.

so unless one is willing to do all of the programming in expert mode to make it act as in EXS then it isn't available in M5.

does that make sense.

I thought Korg was using the UVI engine for their stuff as well, but they aren't listed at the website. It's a rather short list of clients, really.

Maybe MOTU should just buy them :-).

Doesn't Spectrasonic's VI's use the UVI engine also ? Apparently quite a few companies rely on them. But only Mach V seems to be the "dud" so far.

They do.

Maybe the hang-up's with the UVI-Extract software? That's exclusive to M5, I believe.

The engine was in the first spectra products (athmosphere, stylus and trilogy). RMX is built with their own engine and they seem to have problems doing new products with it (even updates are quite slow to come).
Korg have used an UVI derived instrument but from what I know it's mostly from promotional stuff (bundled software, demo sounds...). However korg seems listed as the US distributor for USB and thus most UVI based products.
Keep in mind that the the UVI dev team is very small (mostly 2 guys doing all the programming work), yet they manage to create 3 to 5 new products/instruments a year with new exciting features. You also have to consider the amount of work it is to support ALL current plugin architectures (MAS PPC and Intel, RTAS/HTDM PPC/Intel/Win32, VST PPC/Intel/Win32, DXi, Standalone PPC/Intel/Win32, AU PPC/Intel...) and soon you'll have to add 64 bit PPC, 64 bit MacIntel and 64 bit windows, for multiple releases of MacOS (I think they support 10.3, 10.4, soon 10.5) as well as Win2K/XP/Vista.
I'm pretty sure they'd love to have MachFive 2 released as soon as possible and they're working hard on it.
I wonder what would change about all this if MOTU bought USB :).
I know some of you might think they should hire new programmers then, but the pro audio market being a niche market it's not that easy (and finding competent programmers isn't either).
