Problems with mixing and some nice words about DP
Hello people,
first of all, I'd like to say this: I bought DP4.0 about 2 years ago and back then I had a lot of trouble with it. Very unstable, didn't like the "DP-way" (I used Protools LE a lot) and hated editing in DP. So DP remained untouched on the hard drive for years.
When I client asked me to mix his project with track counts ranging from 40 to 60 per song, I knew I had to use other software than Protools LE, because it has a track limit of 32. Upgrading to an expensive TDM system wasn't an option so I gave DP a try. I updated it to 4.6 and hoped it would work better with my system now.
For the past few days I have been mixing in DP and am very pleased! Actually, I enjoy mixing in DP more than mixing in ProtoolsLE! Things like consolidated windows just rock when mixing. I just put the sequence in the bottom and the mixing board at the top, enabling me to go to different parts in the song while never losing sight of the mixer! Great!
I still think Protools (LE) is way better for editing though, but maybe that's just me.
Still, the subject of this topic says "Problems with mixing". There are two:
Problem 1:
I'm still early in the mixing phase and haven't done any automation yet. Volume and pan work, ok, but I'm having trouble automating plugins. I'm trying to enable/disable a Waves Supertap plugin but somehow it doesn't show up in the automation setup. Isn't it compatible or am I doing something wrong?
Problem 2:
I'm using Aptrigga, triggering with a MIDI track. I have to use VSTwrapper to use it (the AU version doesn't have MIDI capabilities in DP). The strange thing is I have to add it to a normal audio track instead of a instrument or aux track. Well it works this way, so no problem while mixing.
The problem starts when I bounce the full mix. I select all tracks, bounce, and find that the tracks with the VST wrapped Aptrigga plugin isn't in the mix. What could be happening here?

Hey, Pasz.
Possible "Problem 1" workaround:
Why not just hit the auto button on the mixer-strip and record a manual bypass toggle?
You should then see the data for the track in the SE .
If not, bring up the layer in the menu to the left of the track in the SE.
You can now tweak the exact timing of the bypass-action to your heart's content.
Just a thought in case you have no further luck...

Thanx Monkey Man, going to do that in a few minutes. I just came back from the mix room to here to ask a new question:
When freezing the miditracks, it seems like it's doing it realtime, because, well, it takes just as long as the soong itself. Is there a way to do it offline?

Freezing MIDI tracks is done in realtime (just like Pro Tools, incidently) sorry. Just do several VI's at once and you'll get it done real quick. At least you can do bounces offline at faster-than-realtime.
I agree that PT is fantastic for audio editing, but stick with it, you'll find that DP is pretty much as good once you learn the tools and tricks.

Re: Problems with mixing and some nice words about DP
if you want a specific parameter from a plug-in to show on your automation list, what you have to do is set the track to record automation and then move the parameter(s) that you want to be automated. It will then show on the list. This will give you the choice to select what parameters from what plug-ins you want on the list. A list of all parameter for all plug-ins would be impractical.Pasz wrote:Problem 1:

You can also do this taking a snapshot from within the plug-in window, you will then have in the Data type pop-up menu the choice to show All data types in effects window, which means all the parameters of the plug-in, or Active data types in effects window, which means only the parameters that have already been automated.

I ran into a new problem: When I close DP now, a Mac "BSOD" (little dark gray box with white letters) appears and I have to shutdown my Mac. But I guess you guys will direct me to http://www.motunation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9503 for that one so I'll check that sticky first

I assumed you knew how to option-click to bypass; sorry.monkey man wrote:Hey, Pasz.

You probably knew, but I could have been more clear.
Sufficient RAM?Pasz wrote:Oh hey, here's another strange problem: All the plugs from MOTU do have knobs and sliders, but don't have numbers! All those numerical boxes are just empty, even when I change a parameter with a knob. Any solution for that problem?
Font problem?

I had this problem with Motu plugs display long time ago.
Can't remember now what exactly caused it. Languages, fonts or something around it.
But I'm shure I got a workaround with one of the OnyX maintenaces. Clean font cache I think.
